Introduction: Beeswax Lip Balm
While learning to take care of honeybees over the past year, I wanted to learn ways to use their wax and honey. One of the easiest things to do with beeswax is make lip balm. Instead of buying natural lip balms from the store, you can create your own!
Step 1: Harvest Honey
If you have honeybees and you want to make lip balm, you'll have to first harvest your honey. When you scrap off the capped beeswax from the honey, keep it for your lip balm making.
Step 2: Melt and Strain
Now that you have harvested your beeswax, melt it. Melting and straining the beeswax several times will ensure that it is clean of any impurities. Keep your beeswax in a block for later use. When making the lip balm, shave it off with a grater.
For more info on this, here is a YouTube video about it.
Step 3: Gather Materials
You will need:
- Beeswax (1/2 - 3/4 tsp)
- Cocoa Butter (0 - 1 tsp)
- Coconut Oil (0 - 1 tsp)
- Shea Butter (1 tsp)
- Scented Essential Oil (1 drop)
There are several recipes for different lip balms, but these are basic ingredients. Depending on how you want the balm to feel you can use different amounts of each ingredient. It's all about experimenting! You can guy each of these ingredients, but getting beeswax from a hive is the best way to get the wax.
You will also need:
- Stove or hot plate
- Bowl for melting beeswax & ingredients together
- Lip balm containers
Step 4: Melt Beeswax
Using beeswax holds the shape of the balm. Melt the beeswax over low heat first.
Step 5: Add Ingredients
After the beeswax has melting, add the rest of the ingredients that you choose in. Now stir and melt it all together.
Step 6: Prepare Containers
If you're using a lip balm kit, it will most likely come with a handy tool to place all the lip balm stick containers in. This will keep them upright while pouring in the mixed ingredients.
Step 7: Pour the Lip Balm
Pour your melted ingredients into your lip balm containers. Don't overdo it and spill it over.
Step 8: Set Aside
After pouring, set aside the finished lip balms to cool and become firm. Using beeswax, you do not have to cool overnight. Once the lip balm is firm--it is ready to use!

Added a drop of sweet orange oil. Two batches filled my tin. Worked great! Nice color, good texture. Stays on the lips, not too slick like some "store bought" balms. Will definitely do this one again.

Very important to use a double boiler method as show above. Wax can catch fire if it gets too hot! Good Ible thanks!
