Introduction: Bio Friendly Desk Luminaire

Welcome to the world of sustainable lighting design! In this project, we aim to create a functional and eco-conscious desk luminaire using environmentally friendly materials and energy-efficient lighting solutions.

Project Goals:

  • Sustainability: Our primary goal is to design a luminaire that minimizes environmental impact by utilizing compostable or biodegradable materials.
  • Eco-Friendly Materials: We will explore materials such as bamboo, bio-based plastics, and recycled metals to ensure sustainability throughout the design.
  • Energy Efficiency: Incorporating energy-efficient LED lighting technology to reduce power consumption while maintaining optimal illumination for desk tasks.

Join us on this journey to illuminate responsibly and showcase how sustainable practices can be integrated into everyday design projects!

1 x Cup of Water

3 x Nespresso Coffee Pods

1 x Roll of Hand Towels

1 x Piece of High Density crafting foam

1 x Light Bulb

1 x Light Bulb fitting

1 x Meter of electrical cable

Optional:

Hairdryer (To speed up the drying process)

Lamp Shade

Additional Decorations

Step 1: Coming Up With a Unique Design and Making a Foam Model

Start by developing and coming up with a unique and interesting design for your desk luminaire and make a detailed 1:1 foam model of the shape that you have decided on

Step 2: Preparing Your Coating

Firstly, start by Cutting 8 square sheets of paper hand towel into rough equal width strips

These will be used to coat the desk light’s body to develop a textured yet bio-degradable aesthetic

Step 3: Mixing Your Adhesive

Mix the following ingredients together to form a liquid adhesive:

1 x Cup of Water

200 ML of Wood Glue

3 x Nespresso Pod Grounds

Mix all of these ingredients to form a liquid paste adhesive, the coffee grounds acts as an colorant and gives the adhesive a caramel color as well as a nice smell

Step 4: Applying Your Coating

Now it is time to starts applying your paper towel coating to your Polyurethane foam model

Prepare your model by assembling any electronics as needed, then start by taking your strips of paper towel and dip/soak them in your adhesive solution and finally apply them thoroughly all over the body of the lamp, pressing them down and smoothing it as you go

Step 5: Re-Applying Additional Coats

After completely covering and leaving the first coat to dry on your model you can start applying additional coats as needed and/or if you are looking for a rougher texture or darker colour

Then leave the luminaire to fully dry and insert your light bulb and add a light shade if preferred

Step 6: The Final Product

Once you have carefully followed and completed these simple steps and you should have a fully functional Bio Desk Luminaire that could look similar to this, after fully crafting your light you can also add some sort of decorations or a lamp shade etc.
