Biodegradable hanging luminaire. This project is to inspire designers to consider more environmentally friendly designs as the end goal is to ensure circular design.

Supplies

Measuring jug (at least 1lt capacity).

Mixing bowl.

Flat tray (45mm x 35mm x10mm).

Any level (image 1).

Whisk.

Kettle.

Any cylindrical item that is 34mm in length and 35mm in diameter.

Smooth knife.

A drill with a 10mm drill bit.

300mm LED strip with a stick-on property (or use double sided tape).

NB: ONE RECIPE MAKES 3-4 LIGHTS

2 sheets of rice paper.

1kg gelatin.

250g glucose.

250g glycerol.

5ml of green food coloring.

Step 1: Take Your Measuring Jug

Add 1lt of luke warm water to the measuring jug (you can use a kettle to speed up the process) and pour it into the mixing bowl

Step 2: Take Your Gelatin

Add it to the jug in small increments, as to not form clogs, whilst whisking the gelatin into the water.

Step 3: Take Your Glucose and Glycerol

Add it to the mixture of gelatin and water while whisking, please take note, this needs to be done at a certain pace as to not let the water cool down and form jelly.

Step 4: Take Your Food Coloring

Add it to the mixture of water, gelatin and glycerol.

Step 5: Take Your Mixing Bowl

Pour the mixture into the tray that needs to be a flat surface (use the level) and add the 2 sheets of rice paper.

Step 6: Take Your Smooth Knife

Cut the mixture into a piece of 25mm-30mm wide when semi dry as you still need to wrap it around the cylinder.

Step 7: Take the Luminaire

Remove it from the cylinder when the material has cooled off and set in form and place it in a cool, ventilated area.

Step 8: Drill Hole(s)

When the luminaire has fully dried and contains the properties of a plastic, drill either one or two holes through the top for the LED strip to fit through, my LEDs required two holes.
