Introduction: Bleach Painting With Robotic Arm

This project was created as a course assignment at the California State University, Long Beach; taught by Dr. Behnaz Farahi: DESN 490: Generative AI and Robotics.

Group members: Aleyna Akkan, Moroni Perez & Seyedeh Saina Ahadi S.

What is our project about?

This project utilized generative AI Midjourney, Rhino, Grasshopper, and Robot DK to generate a robotic artwork. Gradient photographs were first created using Midjourney. Subsequently, these photographs were made compatible with the robot using Rhino and Grasshopper. Black and white drawings were then produced using Robot DK. Finally, the project was shared on the Instructable platform.

Supplies

  • Bleach,
  • Rhino,
  • Grasshopper
  • Robot DK,
  • T-shirt
  • Black cartoon
  • White Gel Pen
  • Paint Marker

Step 1: Creating & Choosing Images

First, we initiated the project with Midjourney. In Midjourney, we endeavoured to create various gradient photographs. This enabled us to utilize Rhino and subsequently Robot DK.

We also took some of our images from Pinterest!

Step 2: Image Processing With Rhino and Grasshopper

  • After downloading Rhino, we also installed the image plugin.
  • Once we selected the image in Rhino, we uploaded the image we imported into Grasshopper.
  • The image needed to be in black and white for us at this stage.

Step 3: Robot DK

A robotic arm named Robot DK utilized the data from Rhino to produce black-and-white drawings. These drawings represented an abstract interpretation of the gradient photographs.

Due to the direct integration of Robot DK with Rhino, we monitored the entire process after uploading the selected photographs to Robot.

Initially, we ensured that the robot was powered on.

Subsequently, after adjusting the pen settings and updating the robot, we simulated and ensured that everything was proceeding smoothly on the robot.

Then, the robot executed everything for us.

Step 4: First Product: Lost Man

For our initial product, we aimed to depict a man lost in darkness. After uploading the images we generated, we began using a white gel pen and black toned paper. This enabled us to depict the figure of the lost man in the void.

Step 5: Second Product

For our second product, we chose to continue from a t-shirt. Opting for our iconic color, black, we decided to use bleaching to achieve different shapes. After acquiring an empty paint marker, we filled it with bleach. Once again, we started from the void in the first t-shirt. We attempted to proceed with more abstract images so that we could better understand what the robot was drawing.

Step 6: Third Product

Again, we attempted to proceed with a t-shirt. At this stage, our design remained sufficiently abstract.

Step 7: Last Product: Sneak Peak

For the fourth product, we designated a target t-shirt. We decided to achieve this using an instructable. By defining the target with the instructable t-shirt, we endeavoured to produce a suitable model.

Step 8: Final Results

Our final result was three different t-shirts from different shapes! Ready to wear!
