Intro: Bleach Pen Clothing Designs

This tutorial will show you how to create hand drawn designs on your clothing by using a bleach pen!
My favorite part about this project is how versatile it is. You can use just about any piece of clothing! I chose to use a pair of leggings and a shirt.

STEP 1: What You Will Need

What You Will Need:
-Bleach Pen (found at any major grocery store in the laundry isle)
-Article of Clothing (Dont have one you want to bleach? Find something at the thrift store!)
-Something to stick inside of the piece of clothing so the bleach doesnt bleed through it. (I used a flattened cereal box here)

STEP 2: Lets Begin!

1. Start by sliding your cereal box, or whatever your are using, inside of the piece of clothing you are going to bleach.

2. Smooth out all of the wrinkles and make sure your shirt is straight so your design isn't crooked in the end.

STEP 3: Draw Your Design

Start designing your clothing!

Note: The bleach will spread out a little bit so dont make your lines too thick.

Get creative. Look up designs online, freehand them, or draw something you love!
You can also print out stencils of words and use those.

I tried out a Native American/Southwestern Print.

STEP 4: Let It Process, Rinse

Once you are finished with your design, allow the bleach to set into your clothing.

1. When it has set as long as you would like it to, go to the kitchen or bathroom and wash off the rest of the remaining bleach with COLD water.

2. Once the remaining bleach is washed off, give it another good rinse under the cold water.

3. Throw it in the washing machine. Wash with cold water. Dry in the dryer.
If you don't have a washing machine you can rinse your item really well and line dry it.

STEP 5: YOURE FINISHED!!

What a easy way to decorate your clothing!

I got a tide to go pen, will that work same as the clorox? It looks like the solution is thicker with the clorox pen, whereas the bleach pen is a watery consistency...

The tide to go pen won't bleach the clothing; it's design to spot treat stains, so it definitely won't have any impact on bleaching the fabric. It is definitely handy to have, I use it all the time and it really helps to minimize the appearance of stains.

Thanks for your help, SarahC318!

Sarah's right. The Tide Pen is for stains, so it won't work like the bleach pen will.

Good luck with your project and thank you for checking out this tutorial!

Is it safe to wash the belched clothing with your normal laundry directly after you rinse it off? I've done this before and it's great, but I can't remember if it'll ruin the other clothes. Thanks!

Hey there! I would say to wash it separately the first time just to be sure it doesn't bleach your other clothes.

Hi! I was wondering if this would work with having someone sign a black T-shirt w/a Bleach Pen, if it would work and also that keeping it on for a few hours afterwards won't make me sick? What a great idea for concert tees!

Hello Goldinhart,

Thanks for checking out my tutorial! The tricky part is the bleach needs to stay still in order to set. If it touches another part of the shirt it will start to change that part as well. I also would not recommend wearing your shirt while the beach is on it. Bleach is a very strong chemical and could burn your skin.

Thanks again for checking out my tutorial! Have fun at your concert!

I think I'm going to try this today. But I need to know how long it takes so I know when to start since I will be wanting to wear it tonight for an event.

Hello AbbieC1!

Thanks for checking out this tutorial. Sorry for my belated response! This takes up to two-three hours. It depends on how long it takes the bleach to process plus the time it takes to wash and dry the piece of clothing.

Good Luck!
Another good thing you can do for this idea is to mix and match but with totally different colours that you'd thought would never go well together the patterns make the clothing stand out
Its a fantastic idea i might give it a go ??

Have you tried dying the garment after you've bleached it?

I haven't tried that. If you do, let me know how it turns out!

Thank you for checking out this tutorial!
This looks awesome! Gonna try this sometime.
How long exactly do you let the bleach soak?
Thanks for checking it out! I let it soak for about 20 minutes or until all of the bleach soaked into the shirt. The longer you let the bleach sit the bolder and brighter the lines will be.
This is a brilliant idea, Ill have to try it some time :-)
