Introduction: Tie Shaped Pendant

  • I made this from a small piece of hardwood scrap. I'm not exactly sure what kind of wood it is. I grabbed it from left over cutting board projects my son had made.
  • I starting making the pendant without the intention of a tie shape, but when I finished shaping it I liked the look.

Step 1: Tools and Spplies

Tools

  • Sandpaper
  • Awl
  • Cordless Drill
  • Scroll Saw

Supplies

  • CA Glue (super glue)
  • Howard's Butcher Block Oil
  • Coral Sea Shells
  • Scotch Tape

Step 2: Measuring and Shaping

This was a small end grain piece of wood. I drew the basic shape using a square. Cutting the piece outside of the pencil lines so that I could sand it to it's final size

Step 3: Drilling the Holes Then Installing and Glueing the Shells.

  • I used my cordless drill to make the two holes.
  • I then used scotch tape to cover one side of the pendant holes.
  • I found and used small pieces of the shells that were close to the size of the hole.
  • Then I layered pieces of shell and glue until I filled the hole.
  • I used a fine spray of water to help set the glue faster.

Step 4: Sanding

  • I started with a 60 coarse grit to take off the excess CA glue.
  • I then worked my way through finer grits and finished with a 500 grit.
  • I put three coats of the Howard's Oil on.
  • All that was left was to drill the hole for the necklace cord.

Step 5: Conclusion

  • I'm happy with the outcome....but
  • Next time I won't drill all the way through, clearly one side looked better then the other.
  • And I would let the glue dry between layers of shells.
