Introduction: Bringing Back to Life Old Metal Locker Cabinet

About: My name is Omer, I'm an industrial designer and I love to create things. In my free time I work on all kinds of fun projects.

In this project, I am renovating an old metal locker cabinet that I received from a factory that was throwing it away.

The cabinet was received in a battered condition with lots of dents and bends in the metal .

The final goal is to bring it to a reasonable condition so it can be used again, but this time for domestic use.

In these photos, you can see how bad the condition was before the renovation. 😊

Step 2: Remove All the Doors

The first step before starting the renovating was to remove all the doors, making it easier and more convenient to work on the cabinet.

The doors were attached with rivets, so it was quite simple and easy to remove them.

I used a drill with a metal drill bit to drill off the rivets heads, which allowed the doors to detach.

Then, I removed the remaining rivets using a punch and hammer.

Step 3: Metal Shaping

Using hammer blows in the right places and with the help of iron cubes of different thicknesses as a counter to the hammer blows, I managed to straighten out most of the bends in the metal.

I also occasionally used a pliers to bend the metal.

This stage takes a lot of time and requires a lot of patience, as well as ear protection :)

Step 4: Sanding Before Painting.

I used an angle grinder with an iron brush attachment to grind all the surfaces and doors of the cabinet, so that the paint would adhere better afterwards.

Step 5: Preparing for Painting.

I set up my "paint room" and organized the parts for painting.

I used a compressor and a paint sprayer to paint the parts of the cabinet.

Step 6: Painting

I followed the instructions written on the paint can and diluted the paint according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

I waited for the recommended drying time between coats before turning the parts and continuing to paint.

Step 7: Waiting for It to Dry.

Step 8: Adding New Plastic Legs.

I found original plastic legs for the cabinet at the store!

Step 9: Reattached the Doors.

I reattached all the doors using rivets.

It was a very satisfying step 😊
