Introduction: Bucky Barnes Inspired Under-Bust Corset

I made a Bucky Barnes inspired under-bust corset. I made it to wear to Disneyland but it can definitely be worked into a cosplay. These instructions can also be used to make regular or other character themed corsets.

Supplies

  • Leather/pleather
  • Sewing Machine (thread, needle, pins, etc)
  • Red Paint & Mod Podge
  • 1/4 Inch Grommet Kit
  • Black Fabric or an Old T-shirt
  • Saran Wrap
  • Masking Tape
  • Sewing and Craft Scissors
  • 1/4 Inch Boning
  • Ribbon
  • Card Stock
  • Iron

Step 1: Make a Mold for Your Pattern

  • wrap your torso in saran wrap (this is best done unclothed or wearing tight clothing for the best fit)
  • wrap your torso with masking tape where you previously wrapped the saran wrap (make sure you wrap everywhere the corset will lie)

Step 2: Cut Your Mold and Make a Pattern

  • cut down the back of your mold (you can use your spine as a guide)
  • draw your pattern out on to your mold (make sure to draw your pattern along the curvature of the bust)
  • cut along the lines you drew
  • trace what your pieces onto card stock

Tips:

  • (there isn’t a template for your pattern, you are making the pattern)
  • (just draw out whatever you think will look good, this step is all about trial and error)
  • (you can put the paper pattern against your body to see how it will look and if it will fit)

Step 3: Add a Seam Allowance

  • trace your card stock onto another piece of card stock
  • add a 1/4 inch seam allowance then cut out
  • YOU NOW HAVE YOUR PATTERN!!!

Step 4: Trace & Cut Out Pattern

  • trace your pattern onto your leather/fabric
  • cut out pattern

Step 5: Pin and Sew Panels Together

  • pin panels together
  • sew panels together
  • back stitch if desired to add strength to your panels

Step 6: Clean Up

  • cut off extra fabric along seams
  • iron all the seams(green lines) flat (this is so the corset will sit flat onto the wearer)

Step 7: Sew on the Lining

  • use your pattern from earlier to cut out the lining (however, make sure to add a seam allowance)
  • sew the corset to the lining so that it is inside out
  • sew the top and the sides (leave the bottom open so you can turn it right side out)

Step 8: Add Boning & Final Embellishments

  • turn the corset right side out
  • sew pockets for boning (you can pin the boning onto the front as a guide)
  • cut boning to size and slide boning into pockets (you can burn the edges of the boning to round the edges and keep it from fraying)
  • sew on the star and add any other embellishments you desire
  • (if you don’t have red leather/pleather you can achieve the same look by painting the leather you have red and sealing it with mod podge)

Step 9: Hem the Bottom

  • fold over and pin the extra fabric on the bottom of the corset
  • pin the bottom in place and hem the bottom
  • it’s okay if the back is a bit messy, you wont see it in the end
  • focus more on sewing along the same width from the bottom

Step 10: Add the Grommets

  • add 4 to 6 evenly spaced grommets on each side depending on the size of your corset
  • I used 1/4 inch grommets but if you like the look of bigger grommets you can use 1/2 inch ones

Step 11: Finishing Touches

  • cut your ribbon to desired length
  • lace up the back of the corset with the ribbon
  • Voila! You are now fabulous : )
