Introduction: Bugha-Juan: Martial Arts Training Dummy for Form and Control Test

Have you ever wanted to take out your anger on something that can tank the hit?

Have you ever wanted to practice martial arts without a partner?

Well, now you can!


I'm Jason Zafra of DMT J and I shall introduce to you the first version of Bugha-Juan: The Arnis Training Dummy for Form and Control!

Supplies

This project is made from the following supplies:

  • Plywood Base (500mm*380mm*20mm)
  • Plywood Supports/Arms (450mm*380mm*20mm)
  • Plywood Vertebrae (1040mm*16.5*17 mm)
  • 30mm Screws
  • Old Taekwondo/Arnis Armor

Step 1: Cut the Plywood to the Exact Measurements

Use the CNC to cut certain plywood to make the base and the arms as you sand these items for easier attachment.

Step 2: Attach the Wood Together by Friction Fit and Screws

Friction fit the base to the main Vertebrae and screw the arms onto the vertebrae and reinforce.

Step 3: Wear the Armor on the Cross and Pad Accordingly

Wear the armor and pad out the dummy so it becomes a lot stronger and resistant to damage. Reinforcing things with masking tape seemed to be a pretty good idea.

e.g. Double up on the taekwondo armor and pad it with taekwondo helmets, groin guards and other softer material.

Step 4: Try to Test It Out and Adjust Parameters

Add weights on the base, reinforce the vertebrae (pad with more wood) or even add hands that can hold a sticks (TPU simplistic hands). Due to time constraints, I myself didn't get to do this but the main feedback I got from this was that it felt impractical for actual sparring and should be improved upon because wooden beams do not substitute for human skin's softness.
