Intro: Build an Ultra-Durable Jump Rope

Making a nearly indestructible jump rope for yourself or for your child is an easy, money-saving project.

You will need:
- 9 to 10 foot braided polyester (not "poly" or polypropylene) rope, 1/4" to 5/16" thick.
- 2 shiny, steel 3/8" washers. (not galvanized)
- 1/2" PVC pipe, at least 1 foot long.

Note, if this project is for a child under the age of 10 years, an 8 foot rope may fit better.

STEP 1: Making the Jump Rope

Saw or cut the PVC pipe into two five inch pieces. Sand off any rough edges with 150-200 grit sandpaper. Also, sand the pipe pieces themselves. We will use these as handles.

Then, thread the PVC handles over the ends of the rope. Then thread the washers. Finally, tie a knot in each end of the rope. You are almost done. Lets check the rope and see if it is the right size. A rope that is too long is just as hard to jump as one that is too short.

STEP 2: Fitting the Jump Rope

When fitting the jump rope, stand on the rope and hold it up by the handles, as in the picture. The ends should come up to your armpits. As you can see, the jump rope is a little long for him. Fortunately, these jump ropes are very easy to adjust.

STEP 3: Jumping Rope

Now that your jump rope is finished, you can test it out!

STEP 4: Conclusion & Product Testing (Optional)

The DIY PVC jump rope and handles are much tougher than the imported jump ropes sold in stores.

Why Jump Rope?
"It's certainly good for the heart...It strengthens the upper and lower body and burns a lot of calories in a short timeĀ."

"Jumping at a moderate speed of 70 to 120 turns per minute for 15 minutes burns 150 to 200 calories, as much as running a ten minute mile, but with half the impact on your knees and ankles."

Excellent! simple smart design and easy to put together with stuff lying around the shop. works great!
I know a jump rope should be a no brainer. Yet it was really difficult for me to figure out decent handles. And even though they should only cost a dollar it is really hard to find long jump ropes. Thanks for the easy intelligent design. Una
Alternate materials for actual rope? -PKT
Actually, you could go to the local hardware store and buy plastic-coated wire rope. BUT, the reason I wrote this is that I sometimes hit myself jumping rope. Vinyl cord and metal rope sting a bit if you accidentally strike a body part while jump-roping.
How much does each rope cost? I would like to make a set for my platoon of 40
My suggestion: contact Columbia Knot Basin and look at their specials. I think they have 600 feet of 3/8 black braided polyester for $137.00 as of Feb 28th, 2009.
Ya I have had over 5 jump ropes go out on me just using them for 1hr a day 5 days a week, and i have only ben jump roping for 1 year! But this should be a great solution... and it will be heavy and make for a better work out. Thanks
