Introduction: Bungee Rope VS New Car, Where to Tie Them in the Trunk

New cars have no place to hook on a bungee rope in the trunk. Here is the way to do it without changing/damaging you car.

Step 1: Overview & Equipment

New cars have no place to hook on a bungee in the trunk, everything is nicely carpeted.

But you still need to close the trunk to bring that big piece of equipment (couch, Christmas tree, 2x4 …) to your destination (home, mother in law, friend, even the dump ...).

Here is the way to do it without changing/damaging you car.

This work with all model/age of cars.

Equipment:

A bungee rope

A car

A red flag/rag if your piece of equipment is too long

Step 2: Logic

Logic:

Why does this method work:

Car makers tend to use the same time tested method to keep trunk/doors (/and sometime hood) of a car closed.

Parts concerned

On your car (2 parts):

-A metallic brace in form a link (like the one on a chain) on one side.

This is on the bottom part of the trunk, in the center.

-A hook that hold onto that link.

You open that hook with you car key/door handle or on newer model with your remote control. Habitually it is on the lid on the trunk, in the center.

On the bungee rope:

Two hooks which are about the same diameter as the metallic brace of the car.

Note: An adaptation of this technique may be possible with bungee rope witch use big hooks.

Step 3: Procedure

Installation:

1-Place safely that big piece of equipment (couch, Christmas tree, 2 x 4 …) in your trunk.

2-Shorten the bungee rope as needed by making a knot in the rope.

3-Hook one side of the bungee rope by pushing it into the hook mechanism of the lid of the trunk

4-Hook the other side of the bungee rope side by clipping the other hook to the metallic brace of the bottom part of the trunk

5-Install a red flag if needed.

Removal

1- Use your car key to unlock and pull on the hook to release the bungee rope.

If the hook went out of the lock before you where able to release it properly: Put back the hook in the hole then release it properly.

Step 4: Variation on the Same Theme

Variation on the principle:

Instead of placing the hook of the bungee rope in the hook of the trunk simply push the bungee rope inside the hook as you can see in the picture. And make a knot between both hooks to shorten the rope.

This technique may be simpler to use than the previous one and will work with bungee rope which uses big hooks.
