Introduction: CARDBOARD ANT XL
Hi guys,
In this instructables, I did DIY ANT in bigger than it's normal to view by using cardboards,
I am happy to share with you how I did it,
Let's start to craft a bigger ant.
Supplies
- Yours drawing kit,
- Scissors,
- Paper knife,
- Black marker,
- Compass,
- Cotton threads,
- Old wire,
- Colour papers (for eyes),
- Transparent sheet (for eyes),
- White glue.
Step 1: DRAW AN ANT
- Draw an ant's body in bigger cardboard,
- That body contains the head, thorax, abdomen,
- Then cut it away.
Step 2: TRACE AND CUT
- Then trace the body structure in another bigger cardboard and also cut it away,
- Mark them as 1 & 2.
Step 3: CARDBOARD CIRCLES
- Mark lines in 5cm gap in 1st structure and measure the diameter at the same point,
- In the same diameter, draw an circle on cardboard by using compass and cut it away.
- Measure diameter also at joints and make cardboard circles,
- Identify the name of the circle as below,
- H -Head
- TA 1 -thorax 1
- TA 2- thorax 2
- TB - thorax back
- Ab 1 -abdomen 1
- Ab 2 -abdomen 2
- Ab 3 -abdomen 3
- Jo 1 - joint 1
- Jo 2 - joint 2
- Jo 3 - joint 3
- Jo 4 - joint 4
Step 4: BISECT & VERTICAL CUT
- Bisect the cardboard circles and cut in vertically up to half to the circle,
- Make the same distance vertical cut in body structure from the centre line,
- mention all half circles as
↑-upside
↓-downside.
Step 5: CHECK IT
- let's check both, circles and body structure,
- if there are any corrections on it, correct them.
Step 6: MAINTAIN GAP
- If the diameter of the piece more than 10cm or more than 1 half circle, it's important to maintain the gap between them,
- Use cardboard piece to maintain gap,
- the gap from centre piece is 4cm on each sides,
- maintain gap in thorax and abdomen.
Step 7: TRACED STRUCTURE
- Bisect the traced structure(2),
- Separate each body parts,
- Stick small pieces of cardboard sheet in each body parts,
- Stick that body parts in the main structure in both sides.
Step 8: ASSEMBLE
Then assemble all body parts and gap-maintained parts.
Step 9: CARDBOARD STRIPS
- Cut 2.5cm width, flexible cardboard strips,
- using these cardboard, stick all over structure,
- Tie a cotton thread at the starting of each body parts.
Step 10: SKELETON
- Stick the same cardboard strips in each sides of the structure,
- The structure looks like skeleton (ant's skeleton).
Step 11: FLESH
Cut cardboard strips into small pieces and stick over full of the structure.
Step 12: CARDBOARD SHEETS
- Cut this flexible cardboard in the size of A4,
- Dip these cardboard in normal water for 3 min,
- Peel this cardboard and we get 3 different sheets,
- cardboard top sheet, middle sheet and lower sheet,
- Let to dry them,
- we can use top cardboard sheet to finish the structure and a lower cardboard sheet to make other body parts
Step 13: SKIN
- Use the top cardboard sheet into 2.5cm width strips,
- Then cut that strips in 5cm small pieces and use these as skin of body,
- Apply over entire structure by using withe glue.
- Put 2 layers of cardboard pieces as skin.
Step 14: LEGS
- Use lower cardboard sheet in 7*40cm,
- Make them cardboard tubes,
- Insert old wires in cardboard tubes and use it as ant's legs,
- Stick it with main Structure and finish it.
Step 15: MANDIBLES
- Cut a diameter of 7cm circle in the lower cardboard sheet,
- Cut quarter a from centre and roll it fully to the circle,
- Bend it,
- Stick it with main Structure and finish it.
Step 16: ANTENNA
- Roll cardboard tubes as 7*40 cm,
- Insert old wires,
- Stick these with the main Structure and finish it.
Step 17: COMPOUND EYES
- Cut compound eyes shown in the image or in your imagination,
- Use colour sheets for compound eyes with transparent sheets,
- Stick these with the main Structure and finish it.
Step 18: COMPLETED
Finally, put some polish and complete it.
