Introduction: CD Terminator 1.0 - a Machine Made to Send Old Disks Off With a BANG !
Ever wanted to smash a CD ? Why don't you just spin it and see it shatters !
CDs now are just an old technology, we got fascinated by CDs when they happened to be the #1 media storage medium, but technology is running fast enough to make this medium old and unreliable as it used to be , we barely use CDs now BUT we got a huge amount of CDs that we wanna get rid of ! so I wanted to make this action enjoyable and satisfying !
Step 1: TEST TEST TEST !!
I wanted to check how its like to spin CDs super fast using a vacuum cleaner motor , I removed the vacuum propeller and mounted the CD on the shaft using a nut, I placed that in a box and covered it with an acrylic sheet to prevent injuries to happen by the small flying pieces ! ( be very careful when doing so, never take off your safety glasses)
Step 2: BAAANG ! ITS WORKS, SO LET'S BUILD THIS THING !
well, I tried to sketch how its gonna look like , and collected the materials that I need for building this machine!
I found this metal from a junk , it used to be desks before !
SAFETY FIRST !! PLEASE use welding mask or goggles to protect your eyes so you can be able to use them after this project !
Step 3: WELDING
actually this was my first time welding metal and making such thing! I've learned a lot during this process, it didn't look perfect but I was happy enough with the result !
Step 4: WELDING DONE! WHAT'S NEXT ?
welding done, skeleton sprayed, the vacuum motor is mounted at the upper part , got a transparent polycarbonate sheets [it's super strong material that can't be cracked by shattered CD pieces]
the tricky part was the CD mount on the motor shaft. I tried to use different kinds of nuts but mounting the CD was taking a long time using a wrench to lock and unlock the CD, then this guy helped me with lathing a piece of metal that can be fixed on the shaft that holds the CD and can be tightened by hand "any other suggestions are welcome" !
Step 5: FINALIZING
wiring is done, there were a dimmer, led strip and the motor itself
4mm wood sheets are used to cover this baby ,
I designed the logo and laser cut it, placed a safety launcher switch and a push-on button to run the motor.
Step 6: ENJOY !
This machine was exhibited in the Jerusalem Mini Maker Faire and Musrara Mix Art Festival
