COMPACT WALLET FROM AN OLD DIARY - PORTAFOGLIO COMPATTO DA UNA VECCHIA AGENDA

This summer at the seaside I had my wallet with me, but it was inconvenient to carry around, it was large and did not fit in the pouch or in the pockets of the swimsuit, so I thought of making a simple wallet that has all the functions of a classic wallet but with dimensions reduced and aesthetically pleasing, in fact this wallet fits banknotes up to 50 euros, there is space for two cards (which could be an identity card and driving license or credit card) and there is a compartment for coins, which are very useful at the beach bar. So I took an old fake-leather diary and gave vent to my imagination.

Quest estate al mare avevo dietro il mio portafoglio, ma era scomodo da portare in giro, era grande e non entrava nel marsupio e nelle tasche del costume, allora ho pensato di farmi un portafoglio semplice che abbia tutte le funzioni di un portafoglio classico ma con dimensioni ridotte e che sia esteticamente gradevole, infatti in questo portafoglio entrano le banconote fino a 50 euro, c'è lo spazio per due tessere, (che portebbero essere carta d' identita e patente o carta di credito) e c'e lo scomparimento delle monete, che sono molto utili al bar. Così ho preso una vecchia agenda di finta pelle e ho dato sfogo alla fantasia.

Step 1: Cutting Out the Paper Model -

Step 1. Cut out the paper pattern, I first made a cardboard model of the wallet to see if I liked it, I also advise you to do the same if you change the shape and size of the wallet. Otherwise, print on an A4 sheet of paper the files I attached that are 1:1 scale so they should already come out with the correct measurement in mm.

Punto 1. Ritagliate il cartamodello, io ho fatto prima un modello in cartone del portafoglio per vedere se mi piaceva, consiglio anche a voi di fare lo stesso se cambiate forma e dimensioni del portafoglio. Altrimenti stampate su un foglio A4 i file che ho allegato, sono scala 1:1 quindi vi dovrebbero già uscire con la misura in mm corretta.

Step 2: Remove the Cover of the Diary - Staccare La Copertina Dell'Agenda

Step 2. Carefully remove the cover of the diary, of course skip it if you have a piece of faux leather intact. Glue residues on the edge should be removed as much as possible.

Punto 2. Facendo attenzione togliete la copertina all'agenda, naturalmente saltate se avete un pezzo di finta pelle intatto. Vanno rimossi il piu possibile i residui di colla del bordo.

Step 3: Cutting the Wallet Parts - Taglio Delle Parti Del Portafoglio

Step 3. Once the paper patterns have been cut, they must be positioned on the imitation leather in order to optimize the spaces. When you have found the right combination, take the ruler and the cutter and with a steady hand cut all the pieces.

Punto 3. Una volta tagliati, i cartamodelli vanno posizionati sulla similpelle in modo da ottimizzare gli spazi. Quando avrete trovato la giusta combinazione, prendete righello e taglierino e con mano ferma tagliate tutti i pezzi.

Step 4: Assembly and Gluing - Assemblaggio E Incollaggio

Step 4. When all the pieces have been cutted we move on to assembly, I started from the top pocket. First I positioned it to find the best position, once I found it I marked the position with a pencil.Then I took the glue and ran a strand of it along the side edges and the bottom edge. Be careful during this step as it takes a moment to make a mess with the glue. Once the glue has been applied, the pocket must be positioned and kept pressed for a few minutes so that it grips. We proceed in this way also for the second pocket.

Punto 4. Quando tutti i pezzi sono stati tagliati passiamo al montaggio, io ho iniziato dalla tasca superiore. Per prima cosa l'ho posizionata per trovare la posizione migliore, una volta trovata ho segnato la posizione con una matita. Poi ho preso la colla e ne ho fatto scorrere un filo lungo i bordi laterali e il bordo inferiore. Attenzione durante questo passaggio perché ci vuole un attimo per fare un pasticcio con la colla. Una volta applicata la colla la tasca va posizionata e tenuta premuta per qualche minuto in modo che faccia presa. Procediamo in questo modo anche per la seconda tasca.

Step 5: Stitching and Button Application - Cuciture E Applicazione Bottone

Step 5. Mark with the pencil where to position the snap button on both the ''upper wing'' and the lower part of the pocket. Pierce the leather with the pliers and join the two parts of the button between the leather. If you have a machine to crush them it's better, I used the hammer.

Now it's time to do the stitching. Prepare the machine by fitting a rather large needle, I used the 110 needle. If you can adjust the feeding of the feed dogs, set it to the maximum together with the stitch pitch. With the pencil mark the path you have to take to avoid going wrong. If you have leather that sticks and won't advance, use paper between the foot and the leather to make it slide.

Once finished we are going to attach the coin pocket* by gluing the left side first, once the glue has dried we pass it under the sewing machine. I made a sort of O so that the stitching is double and stronger ( even if the glue does the hard work). We do the same with the right side and finally with the bottom

I recommend passing the threads left by the seam with a needle at the back and passing them together 2-3 times and block the knot with a drop of glue then cut the excess threads.

*initially the coin pocket was designed to be 135 mm long but I shortened it to 115 mm.

Punto 5. Segnate con la matita dove posizionare il bottone automatico sia sull' ''ala superiore'' che nella parte inferiore della tasca. Forate la pelle con la pinza e unite le due parti del bottone tra la pelle. Se avete la macchinetta per schiacciarli è meglio, io ho usato il martello.

Ora è arrivato il momento di fare le cuciture. Preparate la macchina montando un ago un pò tosto io ho usato quello da 110. Se potete regolare il trasporto delle griffe mettetelo al massimo insieme al passo del punto. Con la matita segnate il percorso che dovete fare per evitare di andare storto. Se avete una pelle che si attacca e non avanza usate della carta tra il piedino e la pelle per farla scorrere.

Una volta finito andiamo ad attaccare la tasca delle monete* incollando prima il lato sinistro, una volta che la colla si è asciugata lo passiamo sotto la macchina da cucire. Io ho fatto una specie di O in modo tale che le cuciture siano doppie e più forti (anche se il lavoro duro lo fa la colla). Facciamo lo stesso col lato destro e infine col fondo.

i fili in eccesso della cucitura fateli passare con un ago nella parte posteriore anndodateli tra loro 2-3 volte e bloccate il nodo con una goccia di colla poi tagliate i fili in eccesso.

*inizialmente la tasca delle monete era stata progettala lunga 135 mm ma l' ho accorciata a 115 mm.

Step 6: Finishing Touch and Final Assembly - Ultimi Ritocchi E Montaggio Finale

Step 6. With 2 strips of blue lining I went to cover the parts where the glue is still present, they will go inside where the banknotes go so they won't even be seen. I simply glued them with the attack.

Then I took the external part of the wallet and made a seam all around the edge for pure aesthetics, this seam doesn't hold anything, the important thing is to make it stand upright because it's the first thing you'll see

Now let's join the two sides, inside and outside with glue. We do one side at a time, going to glue on the perimeter and leaving a gap of a couple of cm at the bottom center where the glue will not be placed.

The Wallet now is ready! keep it crushed for a couple of days with books to give it shape.

Punto 6. Con 2 strisce di fodera blu sono andato a coprire le parti dove è ancora presente la colla, andranno all interno dove vanno le banconote quindi non si vedranno nemmeno. Le ho semplicemente incollate con l' attack.

Poi ho preso la parte esterna del portafoglio e ho fatto una cucitura tutto intorno al bordo per pura estetica, non regge nulla questa cucitura, l' importante è farla bella ritta perchè è la prima cosa che si verdà

Ora attacchiamo le due parti, interno ed estrerno con la colla. Facciamo un lato alla volta incollando il perimetro lasciando in basso al centro un vuoto di un paio di cm dove non andrà messa la colla.

Il portafoglio è pronto! tienilo schiacciato tra un paio di libri per qualche giorno cosi prenderà la forma.
