Introduction: Camera Automaton

I created a camera automaton so that when you turn the provided knob the picture displayed through the lens flips to a new picture. An inspiration to me wishing to create this is my love for photography.

  • Garbage bag

Step 1: Cut Cardboard As Needed

*Could use box cutter or laser cutter

  • Cut two 2.5in Circles
  • Cut two 4x4in Squares
  • Cut three 7x4in Rectangles
  • Cut four 3x3in Squares
  • Cut one 3x3in Hexagon
  • Cut two 2.5x2.5in Squares
  • Cut camera pieces/accessories as desired

Step 2: Paint/Spray Paint Cardboard

*DO STEP 2 BEFORE STEP 3

  • Paint/Spray Paint two 4x4in Squares, three 7x4in Rectangles, four 3x3in Squares and one 3x3in Hexagon (+ any added accessories) in Grey and Black (or desired color) *note these are your camera pieces
  • Draw, Paint or Print desiredpictures on two 2.5x2.5in Squares

Step 3: Glue Cardboard Into Needed Shapes

  • Form square/cube base with five 6x6in Squares, then glue together
  • Form a cuboid/3D rectangle with two 4x4in Squares and three 7x4in Rectangles (cut a 3x3in square in the center of one rectangle before gluing), then glue together
  • Form a cube with four 3x3in Squares, glue together, then place one 3x3in Hexagon on one of the two open sides, glue in place (this is your lens)
  • Connect your lens to your camera body with glue, then add any additional pieces you created

Step 4: Make/Insert Cam & Follower Mechanism

  • Using two 6x6in wooden rods, cut a circular hole through the center of two 2.5in Circles, then slide one circle onto each rod through the hole, glue one circle directly in the center of the rod and the other 1in to the right of the center.
  • Glue plastic straw (cut down to 1in) 2 inches from the front (open side) of the cube
  • Cut a circular hole on all sides except the back of the cube 2in from the open wall
  • Through the inside of the cube, slide the rod with the slightly shifted circle into one side hole and then the correspond hole
  • Glue this rod in place but still allow for spinning movement
  • Also through the inside of the cube, place the rod with the centered circle into the straw and then slide it through the hole on the top of the cube

Step 5: Glue Camera to Base

  • Glue two 2.5x2.5in Squares with desired picture back to back onto the top of the wooden rod that is sticking out of the top of the cube
  • Glue camera onto top of base *make sure the pictures are lined up so you can view them through the lens

Step 6: Final Product!

  • Decorate your automaton to your desire (I decided to theme mine like a photo booth and used a garbage bag to make "curtains")
  • Rotate the wooden rod in the cube and watch the magic happen above!
