This tutorial shows how to improve any universal tripod thread mount camera to a GoPro mount.

It is useful because Gopro has a lot of mounts that fits any need, such as suction pads, adhesive mounts, attachable for handlebar, seatposts and many others that can be seen on regular or professional kits.

Step 1: Working in the Base

In this case I found an aluminum profile flat bar whose thickness fits in the GoPro base.

Then, bend the profile so it fits inside the two slots. To bend i used a Vice to tighten the slot and between each slot I used another piece of steel, a little tighter than the GoPro slot.

It doesn't have to fit perfectly into the two slots as we will work in that later, but a nearly approximation is okay.

Step 2: The Screw

The camera holds the female part of the screw, so we have to find a screw that fits the camera's thread, the universal tripod size is 1/4-20 UNC or 3/8-16 UNC thread it is 1/4 or 3/8 nominal diameter and 20 or 16 threads per inch, but you can test them directly in your camera.

Drill the bent aluminum in its half with a drill a little bigger than the standard screw, check if it fits and cut the head of the screw as described in the picture.

Step 3: Finishing

Check if the head is not very wide so it can fit in the slot (see the first picture). If it's wider than the slot then repeat the previous step. Screw the nut, cut the aluminum and cut the screw in the length needed to fit in the camera and leave space for a lock nut. It's very useful to rotate the camera in another angle or so.

Sand the aluminum and any dangerous corner and if the aluminum doesn't fit in the slot of the gopro base, adjust it with the vice as needed (see the image).

Point the hole of the aluminum in the GoPro base with a marker and drill a hole that fits with the GoPro screw.
