Introduction: Campfire Billy Holder

This is a campfire billy holder make out of sticks.

Supplies

  • (In instructions called stick 1)1 straight, sturdy, 30 cm long stick (to position billy holding stick)
  • (In instructions called stick 2)1 sturdy, ‘V’ shaped top, 1 metre long stick (to hold billy stick)
  • (In instructions called stick 3) 1 straight, 2 metre long stick (to hold the billy)
  • 1 wood carving knife
  • Thick piece of wood/stick that can act as a baton, approximately 20cm long
  • 1 to 2 cable ties

Step 1: Preparation

Prepare the knife and get into the carving position, with your feet firmly planted on the ground and your legs slightly further than shoulder width apart. Then rest your elbows on your knees, holding stick 1.

Step 2: Carving Stick 1

You are going to carve the end of the stick starting at approximately 8 cm from the end so it has a sharp point. Do this in forward, punching motions and after every few cuts, rotate slightly to carve your way around the stick. Make sure to not do straight cuts the whole time. In order to get the tip pointed, start to cut more inwards, as you reach the end.

Step 3: Carving Stick 2

Now get stick 2 and on the opposite end to the ‘V’ shaped top, you are going to repeat the same steps to make the end a sharp point so it can be stuck in the ground.

Step 4: Carving Stick 3

With your last stick, number 3, you are going to make a v notch 10 cm from the end and this is to hold the billy. In order to do this, you need to lay stick 3 on the ground and position the knife on a 45° angle, then hit the spine of the knife with the stick baton so it’s around ⅓ to ½ way into the stick. Then repeat on the opposite side of the cut and take out the chunk, smoothing it out a bit with the knife to get all the wood out.

Step 5: Assembling the Billy Holder Over the Campfire

  1. Now with your three sticks, you will position them for use. Get stick number 2 and stick it in the ground at the pointed end, 1 metre from the campfire. In line with stick 2, approximately 70 centimetres away, stab stick 1 in the ground, on a 60° angle. With stick number 3, put it through the 'V' and so the tip is directly over the fire. The tip at the opposite end, is going to be cable tied to Stick 1. The height at which you cable tie stick 3 to stick 1, will determine how high and low the billy is over the fire. Now all you need to do is put your billy of water in the notch of stick 3 so it is at the height where the flames are enveloping the bottom of the billy.
