Introduction: Camping Pan

About: I'm back!

Today i made a small pot using an old tuna can. I put a handle on it that was made of a clothes hanger, wrapped in insulated wire. The wire makes it so the handle is cool to the touch when boiling water. The only problem is the first time you use it, the plastic on the inside of the can blackens and peels off. Other than that, it works fine. Also remember to take off the paper on the outside of the tuna can.

In order to prevent rust the inner part of the can is covered with some sort of plastic, which in case of heating mixes with the water and may cause cancer. Use this setup only in extreme survival situations.

Why do they add a carcinogenic substance to something that holds food?

The coating is to prevent the acids in the food dissolving the can. Originaly they where made from tin coated steel, with a soldered seam (more tin and lead) both of which are toxic. More modern cans may be made of aluminimum, which has been associated with Altzimers disease.

So long as there is water in the can when it is being heated, the inner plastic coating will not come off. It only comes off if you leave nothing in the pan, and you can let it burn off and then use sand paper and steal wool to remove any that remains.

My friend and i let it burn off for a while before we used it. We used steel wool to scrape off most, and just sitting over a fire burnt off the rest.

Thanks. The notch is a spout to pour out water, as i use it to boil water.
