Intro: Carved Wooden "bat" by Step

This is a hand-carved (from a single piece of tree) club. The design is of a head with a sphere in it's mouth.

I didn't make it, but I know the guy who did, and he doesn't have access to the internet.
10 hours work I am told...

Phone-pictures I'm afraid.

This is great. I love it. Any idea what wood it is?

Hi,

I did know, but can't remember now. I was just a piece of common tree, the colour having been added. Thick bit was trunk, the long bit a branch.
(The guy is a real craftsman/artist)

L
what is the animal head?...
I can just imagine some-one wielding it and saying.." surrender, lest you too feel the bite... of the (insert animal's name here)!"
I think it's a jaguar am I right?

...surrender, lest you too feel the bite...of the jaguar!
I don't know, but the old-guy is good with wood.

L
It resemble's a Shillelagh more then a bat.

That is what it essentially was before it was carved, you're quite right there.

L

the guy is very talented

l
Your "L" is not a capital. This disturbs me.
keyboards all bust, using 'on screen keyboard' for now

L
If you need a keyboard, just ask! (unless you just have not got to the shop yet)

I've 3... just need to fix one.

L
Wow. You must love this site, my frustration would over power my urge to sit here on Instructables and talk to people if I didn't have a keyboard.
10 hours? That seems superfast to me. You should ask to record a time-lapse video of him doing it! Awesome stuff.

i'd like to see that, but it'd probably involve hanging around Step's place for a coulple of days.

L
Nice Shelale, this one is menacing enough to be considered more of a Cudgel.

How does he stain it so dark? ash is the whitest of wood, I really like the finish he has achieved.
it was your classic shillelagh (or however it should be spelled) before it was carve, i'll ask Step next time i see him about the stain.

L
What wood was it made out of?

ash i think. the thick end was 'trunk' and the rest a branch

L
I can see that, it's very well done!
