As part of my project and in being in the Halloween spirit, I decided to carve a pumpkin with Jack Skellington portrait with a heart of thorns around it. It is a complex design to do but the ending is definitely worth it.

Supplies

Trash bag

Spoon

A knife

A pumpkin of your choosing

A Bowl of any kind

A sharpie or marker

A candle

Optional: a Carving Kit

Step 1: Prepping!

Prepare your area by placing a trash bag on the table in order to let the pieces of pumpkin. Place your pumpkin of your choosing (can be fresh from pumpkin patch or from your local store).

Step 2: Mark the Stem!

Mark around the stem in order to carve it with a knife.

Step 3: Take Out the Top!

Use your knife to carefully carve the stem out following the circular dotted lines. Make sure to angle the knife slightly inward so that the lid will not slip inside.

Step 4: Scoop Scoop!

By using a scooper (i.e. ice cream scooper), you will scoop out the seeds and any guts that are in the pumpkin. Collect the seeds in a bowl where you can later use them to roast. The inside of the pumpkin should be empty like the picture above.

Step 5: Designing Jack!

Using a sharpie or marker, draw out Jack in any design of your choice. I picked to do Jack Skellington in a half heart with thorns. The thickness of the design is the thickness of how you will carve the lines out.

Step 6: Let the Carving Begin

Using your knife or carving kit, carefully cut and carve along the lines that you have created. Be very careful doing this step as it may result in harm. Take your time to avoid any unnecessary accidents.

Step 7: Almost There!

Jack's body can be a little difficult, but you can do it! Take your time to carve around the small corners without cutting into yourself. I recommend poking the corners to create an indention to make it easier to carve out. Poking the line will create a thick hole making it easier to cut out the pieces.

Step 8: Final Look!

The final piece should come out like this!

Step 9: Let There Be Fire!

Light a candle and carefully put it inside the pumpkins hole that we created on top. Place the stem of the pumpkin back into the hole and you have your very own Jack Skellington on a pumpkin!
