Introduction: Cauliflower Head: Halloween Veggie Centerpiece
This project really cracks me up...I laughed the whole time I was putting it together.
I had this ugly green styrofoam head in my possession that needed a refashion and this is what I came up with. Cauliflower Head was the star attraction in my veggie platter for last year's Halloween party. :)
Here's what you need to get started:
*styrofoam head
*spray paint
*cauliflower
*toothpicks
Step 1: Paint the Head
If your paint is not food-safe, let the head sit and off-gas for a while before using it to get rid of any fumes or paint smell.
Step 2: Prepare the Cauliflower
Break your cauliflower head into smaller florets. I wanted to use purple cauliflower, but all I could find was yellow. Bright green romanesco broccoli would have been cool too. If all you can find is white cauliflower, you might consider painting your head a funky color instead of black.
Step 3: Arrange the Cauliflower
Stick a toothpick in the bottom of each floret and then stick the other end of the toothpick into the head, arranging the pieces all over the head in a "brain-like" way. Be sure that the cauliflower does not touch the head if your paint wasn't food safe.
Step 4: Party Time!
Place your head on a small cake plate to elevate it from the rest of your veggie tray. Add a "necklace" of veggies around the base if you'd like. I used the tops of my bell peppers, but radishes would be cute too, for a "pearl necklace" type look. Then enjoy your party and watch your friends laugh!

I think any dismembered head around halloween is a great spooky decoration. The col-y-flower is great imagination haha!

This gives me a great idea!!! Make the head into a bowl and arrange the cauliflower to look like a brain!!!!....Thanks for sharing

I like the bowl idea! You just gave me another idea....cut the head off flat and use a pate or cheese-ball-type food to create a rounded brain on top. We did a smoked salmon pate brain once and it was funny...would look awesome perched on a head. Yum! :)

Hmmm, I wonder if the cauliflower would wick up food coloring, like white carnations? Anybody try that?

carnations are edible too

I did not realize carnations were edible...have lots of other edible flowers in my garden though...might be a fun centerpiece with flowers...like a flowery chia pet!

Oooh...that's a fun idea to try. I have never seen that done, but you know now I have to try it. I can tell you that if you squeeze lemon on purple cauliflower, it turns hot pink. ;)
