Cement Vase

I feel extremely joyful when I create things on my own. This time I wanted to experiment with cement. I created a vase with it using an old plastic bottle. Though I did go wrong at places, the end result came out beautifully. Here is an instructable explaining my process, and the places where I went wrong.

Step 1: You Will Need

A nicely shaped plastic bottle

A plastic sheet

Cement (I use white cement but you could use portland cement)

General stationery

Old newspapers, as this will get messy

Gloves, as cement causes extreme dryness

Step 2: Cut

Cut open the top of the bottle.

Step 3: Center Cavity

Create a cylinder from the plastic sheet, this will form the cavity of the vase.

Make sure its diameter is considerably smaller than you bottle.

My cylinder collapsed after I poured in my cement, so make sure that the cylinder is strong enough to take some pressure. As I used a plastic sheet, I did not require any releasing agent against the cement.

Step 4: Mix the Cement

Mix the cement according to the instructions provided on the packet. I mixed it till a peanut butter consistency.

Step 5: Pour the Cement

Pour a small amount of cement and place in the plastic cylinder, make sure its centered. Then add the remaining cement around the cylinder. Do not pour any cement inside the cylinder.

Add some weight inside/ on top of the cylinder, or else it will float onto the surface like mine.

Once done, let dry for a few hours.

Step 6: Remove the Cylinder

Once my cement was half dry, I pulled out the center cavity.

Now let it dry over night.

Step 7: Cut Open the Bottle

Once the cement has dried, cut out the bottle. This may take a little time, but plastic will not stick to the cement.

Step 8: Finish It

Later, you can sand some uneven edges. I cut the top of my vase in a slight angle to make it look a little more dynamic.

Step 9: Decorate

And you are done! A well deserved success :)
