Introduction: Chain Stitch

The chain stitch creates the base for all crochet projects. It's also very easy to learn and do quickly. Once you've mastered it, you can create a necklace, headband, or bracelet with only a chain stitch!

Step 1: Materials

You'll need yarn and a crochet hook that matches the yarn's size. On the yarn label, it will indicate the needle size that is appropriate for the yarn. You'll also need scissors to cut off excess yarn.

Step 2: Slip Knot

Before you can chain, you need to tie a slip knot on your needle.

Make a loop near the end of your yarn.

Reach through the loop and pull a section of the yarn through the loop.

Pull on the long end of the yarn while holding the short end until the knot is tight on your needle.

Step 3: Grip

There are different methods for holding the yarn and needle, but I prefer to hold it as pictured.

Step 4: Stitch

Wrap the needle under and then over the yarn.

Pull the yarn through the slip knot.

Push the needle up and repeat.
