Introduction: Changing Mower Blades

Knowing the aspect of keeping fresh blades on your mower will speed up your cutting time and increase the look of your lawn. I’m going to show you in a few simple steps how to change the blades on a mower. The benefits of sharp blades on a mower are like blades on a razor. The sharper the blade the cleaner cut.
Step 1: Tools Needed
When changing the blades on a riding lawn mower there is certain tasks to complete before you can start. First, you will have to round up all the tools needed usually applies to an impact with a half inch socket, a winch or a five gallon pail to lift the front end up and lastly a puddy knife to scrape off all the existing grass on the deck.
Step 2: First Step
Start by checking the condition of your mower blades to see if they need changing. If they need changing drive the mower to a good work surface and turn the engine off with pulling out the key. Enable the lock in the park break.
Step 3: Next
Next, lift the front of the mower off the ground to the work area needed. Usually just enough room for the impact to fit on the bolts. With lifting the mower you can either lift it and slide a 5 Gallon pain under the front tire or use a winch and lift it that way usually a little safer. Be careful this is the most dangerous part of the job.
Step 4: Then
Then once the mower is at the height thats comfortable for you take the impact with the half inch socket and perform to take the bolts out on the three blades. Make sure the impact is in reverse mode not drive it will show on the side.
Step 5: Now
Now depending on how much grass has been mowed and the condition the grass was that will indicate how much you will have to scrape off. Make sure the whole underneath is clean and that you didn’t forget any causing un balance like conditions. Wear safety glasses that way grass derby doesn’t come in contact with your eyes.
Step 6: Blade Check
Take the old blades to a small engine shop or a big outdoor retail store to find the new blades needed. The new blades will often have a sticker on them either take them off or leave them on. Putting the new blades on will just take a few easy steps such as applying them to the old blades previous location and tighten them until the impact wont spin the bolt anymore csdouble check to make sure there tight before proceeding.
Step 7: Finally
Finally once the new blades are on lower the mower back down to the ground. Turn on the engine with the key thats in the ignition and run it at half to three quarter throttle and turn on the pto to run the new blades.
