Introduction: Chess Piece Knight Pleated Origami

About: A fellow hobbyist venturing into creative ideas

I made this chess piece Knight to add to my chess set and complete missing pieces from my old chess set.

Supplies

  1. Printer
  2. A4 sheet to print on, this can be hard sheet or soft sheet.
  3. Reference image as attached.
  4. Pair of scissors.
  5. Glue/ Stapler.

Step 1: Print the Reference Image

  1. Printout the reference image using printer.
  2. Adjust the dimensions as per requirement.
  3. Make sure all pieces have the same width.
  4. Print on white or black sheet of paper as requirement.
  5. Cutout the image and a small rectangular blank piece of paper with the same height and width same as that of twice the width of a single frame in the image. This is the attachment to connect the two ends of the 3D model.
  6. Cut out two strips of paper with same dimensions as that of the pattern to create the head.

Step 2: Fold Along the Lines As Per Red and Blue

  1. As per reference to image, fold the bottom blue line (horizontal) as valley fold.
  2. Fold all other blue lines as mountain fold.
  3. Fold all red lines as valley fold.
  4. Try to make the shape as per image attached.

Step 3: Attach the Two Ends to Make a 3D Model

  1. Using the strip of paper, attach the two ends of paper to make a 3D shape.
  2. I have used staple pins to attach them.

Step 4: Re-Fold As 3D Model

  1. Re-fold all the lines as a 3D model.
  2. Try to rotate the shape as you fold the lines, to create curve shape.
  3. Start with base which is flat and easy and then proceed to the mid-section of the Knight.

Step 5: Create the Head

  1. Take the two strips of paper.
  2. fold them along the longer length in half.
  3. fold the first strip in half again as shown.
  4. Keep the folded strip over the unfolded strip.
  5. Make the gun shape. (Wrap the one strip around the other strip in between and then bring the ends of the outer strip inwards until crossing the inner strip's inside and then pull it to tighten as shown)
  6. Reverse the nozzle of the gun, bring the inner tube outside and reverse insert it again.
  7. The open side (two edges) are the back of the head and the other side is the nose of the Knight.
  8. Make some small adjustments and folds to give it a Knight shape.
  9. Attach to the top of the base.

Step 6: Move Knight to Two and a Half Steps.

The Knight is ready!

Step 7: PS: Completed Set.
