Intro: Child's Grocery Bag Re-make

My 2 year old son often helps me do the grocery shopping, so I thought I'd get the sewing machine out and make him a bag of his own.

After sourcing a canvas grocery bag from your favorite store, the first step is to cut off the sides and lay the bag out flat.

STEP 1: Trim the Fabric

Trim down the front and back of the bag to size. Remember that the bottom part of these will also form the bottom of the bag, so leave a little extra.

You will also need to trim down the sides of the bag (both height and width).

STEP 2: Unpick the Handles

Unpick one end of each handle using a seam ripper. Cut about one third off the length and sew it back on again, using the same stitching pattern as before. Mine wasn't as neat, but I've had complaints so far...

STEP 3: Sew It All Back Together Again

Sew the bag back together again, working inside out. I started by putting the two sides onto the front of the bag, then the back of the bag. Finally, I was able to sew up the bottom of the bag, cutting off any surplus material.

I just used a straight stitch all of the way around, and then did an overlock to stop fraying. Turn the bag the right way out and you're ready to shop!

Rather than cutting up a new bag, I might "re-make" an old one instead.  I was wondering what to do with the old bags I have as the corners and edges start wearing out.  Cutting off those worn edges (and stains that have accumulated in the bottom of the bag) would be a perfect way to get one more round of use for that old big grocery bag ... making a smaller bag for my helper-kids!

I don't get it. You tore up the bag, then sewed them right back together again? The last photo looks the same as the first? What is the point?

HAH! This is awesome! I work at Trader Joe's, and I'd love to see some kids with these little bags.
