Introduction: Chocolate Nut Assortment

Chocolate hearts aren't for everybody...

Step 1: Form Mold

Make Wooden Frame
Cut two 3.5" wood strips
Cut two 5" wood strips
tape all pieces together.  Tape the last corner with a tab of duct tape to use as a clasp (you will need to attach and remove it for each batch)

Silicone Putty Set Up
Measure out equal parts of silicone putty components and mix according to instructions
Spread out evenly in the frame
Place hex nuts
Wait 10 minutes

Cut Mold
Remove nuts from mold.  This can be tricky since you will have to unscrew them off the silicone.
Cut each section in half.  Trying to unscrew less-than-solid pieces can result in accidental cracking.
To make filled chocolate, cut out middle piece of silicone and sand to even out both sides.

Variation
I also made a smaller mold with different size nuts...and a wing nut : )

Step 2: Chocolate Shells

Once the mold is all set, it is time to fill it!

Melt chocolate over stove or in the microwave and stir until smooth.  I used a small pitcher so that the chocolate could be poured directly from it.  I added a silicone sleeve to the side in lieu of an oven mitt.

Pour into molds.
For the molds that will have filling, pour in enough to cover the bottom and use a spoon to push chocolate against the sides of each section.
Sections for the solid sections should be filled in 3/4 of the way.

Tap mold against the table to push air bubbles up and ensure that chocolate spreads out evenly.

Place mold in the freezer for 5 minutes.

Step 3: Solid Chocolates

A few variations for solid chocolates.  Try stirring in...
  • Dark and white chocolate together
  • Chopped pistachios
  • Coconut flakes
  • Drizzle with contrasting chocolate

Step 4: Amaretto Truffle Filling

Remove molds from freezer and fill with...

Amaretto Truffle Filling

6 ounces Chocolate
1 Tbs Butter (unsalted)
1/4 Heavy Cream
1/8 cup Amaretto

Directions
  • Melt chocolate in a double boiler
  • Add butter and cream and mix
  • Once smooth, add Amaretto
  • Pour mixture into a glass dish and set in the fridge for about an hour
  • Use small spoon to take some truffle out and place in a chocolate shell
  • Cover in chocolate and allow to set

Step 5: Additional Fillings

Try out different fillings! Nutella is great in anything, and peanut butter is a natural choice.

Now what other candy hardware to make...?
