Introduction: Purple Chocolate Rain

About: Designer of things, Maker of weirdness and Baker of the macabre.

Prince was one of my favorite artists growing up. I think many people can relate to this masterful poet and performer. He will be greatly missed, but his soul and passion lives on in his amazing music.

I wanted to do a little tribute for this wonderful Icon, so today I'm going to show you how I created this Chocolate Prince.

Step 1: You Will Need

For Modeling Chocolate

• 24 ounces white chocolate chips
• 2/3 cups light Karo syrup
• Bowl
• Butcher Paper/wax paper
• Fondant color

For Stand

• 1 Inch thick wood circle
• Modeling wire
• 1/4 inch doweling rod
• Drill
• 1/4 inch drill bit
• Black paint
• Paint Brush
• white paper
• scissors
• hot glue gun

For Decorating

• Rice crispy treats
• Gold edible spray paint
• lemon
• paint brushes
• fondant color
• bowl

Step 2: Make Your Modeling Chocolate

You can purchase modeling chocolate, but why spend the extra cash when it is SO easy to make??

You will need:

  • 24 ounces White Chocolate Chips
  • 2/3 cup Light Karo Syrup
  • Butcher Paper/ Wax Paper

First melt your chocolate in the microwave 15 seconds at a time. You never want it to get too hot, aim for luke warm.

Then when all the chips are melted, FOLD in the Karo syrup. DO NOT stir! Stirring will mix it to fast, and ruin the chemistry. Once it's been folded, it should reach a cookie dough like consistency.

Then get rid of the access oil by kneading the chocolate on butcher paper. Make sure most of the oil is gone, before coloring your chocolate. It should have a satin look, but not oily.

Set aside.

Step 3: Make Your Stand

I wanted him to stand freely, so I made this simple wooden stand that looks like a record.

You will need:

  • Inch thick wood circle
  • 1/4 inch doweling rod
  • 1/4 inch drill bit
  • Drill
  • Black Paint
  • Paint Brush
  • White Paper
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue

Pick where you want your rod to go. I chose off center.

Drill your hole, and make sure your rod fits securely.

Paint your wood piece, let dry, then glue a small circle of white paper in the middle.

Fit the rod, and your done!

Step 4: Form Face and Hair

Start forming your face once your modeling chocolate has set covered, at least 8 hours. Overnight is best.

Start by forming the nose and forehead.

I chose to focus on the lips and cheekbones since that is what Prince is known for.

To form the hair, cover the head, and shape a somewhat bouffant style.

Then add curls by first wrapping modeling chocolate around a shaping tool or doweling rod.

Step 5: Eyes and Facial Hair

Place small ovals of white modeling chocolate in the eye sockets.

Add a mustache and eyebrows, by adding small black strips of modeling chocolate with a fondant tool.

Set head aside in refrigerator to keep from becoming to malleable.

Step 6: Make Body Support

Set head on top, to make sure the length is right.

Then wrap wire around rod to create arms, and another leg.

Step 7: Build Body

For this step you will need:

  • Rice crispy treats
  • Fondant roller and tools
  • All your colors of modeling chocolate

First form the body over the wire with rice crispy treats. Let chill.

Then cover body with modeling chocolate, forming the hands and boots first, then covering the body with the white ruffle and purple coat.

Add touches like a high collar, and trim last.

Step 8: Make Guitar

You will need:

  • Modeling chocolate
  • Edible gold spray paint

Form your guitar shape.

Add detail using your fondant tool.

Paint with gold spray.

Let dry.

Add strings and details. Use a little water to adhere them.

Step 9: Paint the Details

Painting modeling chocolate can be tricky, you can use Vodka. But if you'd rather avoid the alcohol, you can use fresh lemon juice.

Squeeze lemon juice into a bowl.

Use a fine tipped paint brush, and dip the brush into the lemon juice and then the fondant color. You can use dry or liquid color.

I used liquid.

Step 10: Finishing Touches

The guitar is just resting in his hands, no need to attach it.

Add a guitar strap,

Smooth any visible cracks with a rounded fondant tool,

Let chill in refrigerator.

And there you have it! I hope you enjoyed this ible, I certainly enjoyed creating this piece as an homage to a brilliant musician, song writer and humanitarian. Purple is associated with wisdom, dignity, independence, creativity, mystery, and magic, all of which this great artist exuded. Thank you for reading.
