Introduction: Christmas Mega Tree
Everyone needs a mega tree for their Christmas light display. There are a few other instructions and kits on the web but here is how I did mine. I know it's not that Mega only being 11' tall but I like it.
Step 1: Materials
You will need
1 - 10 foot 2" pvc pipe
1 - 2" pvc cap
1 - 1/2" pvc pipe 24"
1 - fence post stake
1 - 4x4 2' piece of wood
8 - Strands of green lights 25' length
1 - Light up star
1 - Plastic tubing 20' 1/2 to 3/4 is fine
6-8 yard stakes
Optional Light O Rama with 9 free channels or other means to power the lights
Step 2: The Build
Begin by cutting out a section of the 4x4 just large enough to fit the pipe and the wood into the fence post spike. I used my table saw for this step.
Then with a jigsaw or hand saw cut out eight slots in the top of the pipe to allow the lights to sit in. Sorry I don't have a picture of this step, but cut the slots wide enough so they don't break and deep enough to allow the PVC cap to fit over with the lights in them.
Now insert the PVC and wood into the base of the fence post and screw 6 long screws through the wood into the pvc to hold it. Don't screw it tight until after you get the spike in the ground.
Measure and cut the plastic tubing for your base. You can check on line for different diameters but mine is 5'. Connect it together anyway you want. I used duct tape. Now drill about 8 evenly spaced holes through the pipe for the yard stakes
The top star cap is made with a 2' by 1/2" PVC pipe secured into a 2' PVC cap. Drill a hole in the center of the cap, slide the pipe in a few inches and drill a few screws through the cap into the pipe. Take care to get the pipe straight. My star is from my wife's grandfathers Christmas decoration collection. Needless to say it's old but still works well. I attached it with some zip ties and ran the wire down.
Step 3: Installation
Find a good spot and dig a starter hole for the stake. Hammer it in the rest of the way checking for level. Then back fill and finish off.
Stretch out and tie the female end of your first light strand to the base pipe and run the other half up to an open slot. Run it back down and tie off on base pipe. You should make it snug but don't bend the pole.
Find a good centered position for the base pipe and secure to the ground with stakes.
String the rest of the lights as needed, doubling over in the slots at the top and evenly spacing the bottoms.
Once that is done you can cap off the top with the star piece and hook up your wires.
I had a guide line and stake from an old blow up Christmas decoration that I used to make the tree stand straight but hopefully you won't need to do that.
Step 4: Finished
I recommend animating the tree with LOR or something similar. Next year I'll paint the PVC with Krylon spray paint and make it taller. I hope you liked my instructable and get inspired to make your own mega tree.
