Introduction: Cider Spiced Poison Apple Cupcakes
A few days ago I was at the store and I came across a box of cider apple cupcakes. Mmm…sound delicious! And you know what sounds even better???
Poison apple cupcakes!
Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients and Get Mixing!
For this recipe you will need:
- 1 box of apple cupcake mix or cake mix, prepared
- 1/2 can of frosting (the box mix I got had 2 pouches already included but you can also use cream cheese frosting
- Red candy melts
- Lime green candy melts
- Pouch of instant hot cider mix (optional)
- Tootsie rolls
- Apple mold (I got mine on Amazon.com here)
Step 2: Crumble Up Your Cake
Start by first preparing your mix per the instruction on the box. If you can’t find an apple cake mix, any cake mix you’d like is fine.
Once your cupcakes/cake are made, crumble them up in a large bowl and mix in your cider powder (just to really kick up the cider flavor) and enough frosting to create a thick paste that holds together when gently squeezed. You want it to be a dough like consistency.
Step 3: Making Your Apples
Melt your red candy melts by zapping them in the microwave for 15-30 second bursts, stirring between each zap. Make sure your candy melts are completely melted and smooth.
Fill up your apple mold with the melted candy and swirl to evenly coat the inside with a layer of candy and then dump out the excess. Turn the molds upside down over a piece of waxed paper and allow to continue to drain for about 5 minutes.
Pop the molds into your freezer for another 5 minutes to firm up.
Depending on how thick you made your first layer of candy melts inside your apple, you might want to do a second coat. The idea is to have a candy shell that’s thick enough to hold your cupcake dough but not so thick that it’s hard to eat. Usually, a good coat or two is enough.
Once your apples have firmed up and are thick enough to handle, gently fill them up with crumbled apple filling. You want to fill them up but not pack too firmly as you don’t want to accidentally crack your apple shells.
Use a bit of melted candy melt to glue the two sides together.
Cut your Tootsie Rolls into thirds and, using the heat of your hands, warm them up until they’re easy to roll into a stem shape.
With some more candy melt, attach to the top of your apple.
Now, you could technically walk away from your apples at this point and call them done…but why quit here???
Step 4: Making Them Deadly Adorable
Melt down your lime green candy melts the same way you did your red and fill a small squeeze bottle with them once they’re liquid. Let it cool for about 2-3 minutes before applying to your apple. You want it to remain liquid but not be so warm that it melts through your apple.
Holding your apple in a paper towel in one hand (to keep it from melting in the heat of your hand), gently use the tip of your squeeze bottle to outline the eyes and nose of your skull.
Allow this to harden, then, using your squeeze bottle, drip green all down the top and sides of your apple, being careful to work around the outlines you did for your eyes and nose.
Pop your finished apples into your fridge to cool and then serve and enjoy and…

These are creepy, but so cool. I used to go all out at Halloween when my kids were young. These would have been a huge hit for them. Great little treat!

They look like the poison apple whilst the wicked witch is making it in Snow White - there is a stage where it looks just like this. Is it where you got the idea?

Yes! I grew up on Disney's Snow White and loved that part... I tried to make sure my apples looked like hers.

That is just to cool. I haven't seen that flavor here, not that I have looked for them. Be sure to check it out next time I am in the store. Of course I am sure I could find them on the net.

You might be able to find the mix on Amazon.com, but it's not hard to make by adding powdered apple cider mix to a vanilla cake mix. A splash of apple cider juice and a scoop of applesauce in place of the oil also helps add the right flavor.
