City Skyline Pallet Art
Intro: City Skyline Pallet Art
Tools/Material
- hammer
- saw
- sand paper
- coffee/varnish/woodstain
- masking tape
- screws
- hanging wire
- Pallet/wood boards
- nails
STEP 1: Wood Prep
Please see my other instructable on how to lay out the wood:
https://www.instructables.com/id/American-Flag-Pall...
Basically its stripping a pallet ,sanding it down and laying each wood board horizontal to each other.
Hammer them to a 3 vertical beams evenly spaced at the back of the boards.
The number of boards is up to you, for this I wanted the width to be much greater than the height as it is a landscape skyline.
STEP 2: Skyline Layout
I used a picture of Johannesburg city as a reference, Complete with Ponte, The Hillbrow tower and Mandela bridge...
Place the masking tape Over the general area of the buildings and use a box cutter and a ruler to cut the building shapes.
Remove the excess tape
STEP 3: Wood Stain
In order to darken the wood, you can use a woodstain off the shelf or a varnish. I decided to go with a quick home remedy.
Make a large cup of dark strong coffee and dip a rag in it and apply it to the wood. Add extra layers for a darker effect.
Other home made stains include tea, oils and steel wool in vinegar left for a few days. I believe its the rust that gives it the colour so Im sure nails would work as well.
Here you can see Ive added the moon
Once the coffee has dried remove the masking tape and your all done.
For added contrast you can varnish over the darkened wood areas.
Add a screw on either side at the back and string hanging wire across in order to hang the board on the wall

The first one I got, I picked up off the side of the road where they were doing construction on a townhouse. The bricks are delivered on pallets, then they throw them away. I needed more so I went to Builders warehouse in Norwood and asked them if they have any spare . The compost and cement is moved around on pallets. They landed up giving me 3, but you need a bakkie to transport them.

This is really cool. I like how you can take this idea and use it for tons of different cities with cool skylines.
