haha we did this in a html website assignment for school.
we had to make a website using notepad and raw html, so we, at the end added heaps of ASCII images. which i assure you were not, appropriate.
? ASCII art has eluded you for this long? I don't exactly have a wish to make mean comments, but people have been making ASCII art since the dawn of computers; mostly as a way of creating images before computers had the ability to create images.
ASCII generators have been around for many years as well, I remember playing around with a ASCII generator tool on AOL about 10+ years ago.
The Netpbm tools have included a utility that will do this for you, for a good many years. As well as tools for adjusting the resolution, image depth, etc., which you will probably want to do before you do the ascii conversion itself.
My guess would be that the cited website is using the netpbm tools itself, wrapped up in an easy-to-use - if rather inflexible - GUI.
There's a place for nice GUIs, but if you're the type who likes hacking together neat concoctions, the netpbm tools might be worth a look.
