Introduction: Converting a Wire Wrapped Beaded Bracelet Into a Necklace

It can take a lot of time and effort to make a wire wrapped beaded necklace. A much faster and easier way is to make a bracelet and add chain to extend it into a necklace.

Note: This tutorial is designed for those already familiar with the technique for wire wrapping jewelry and making open loops.

If you are not familiar with wire wrapping you can visit Handmade Gemstone Crystal Link Necklace for a tutorial by Melissa OCMD. To make the bracelet, follow her instructions for Steps 12-19 then wrap the wire around the tip of the pliers completing the loop and cut the wire with a flush cutter. If desired, you can continue through Melissa OCMD’s steps 24; however, this is a more complicated technique.

Step 1: Supplies

You will need:

All jewelry items can be purchased at a craft store such as Michaels.

  • Beaded bracelet (already made)
  • Chain link
  • 2 Jump Hoops
  • Clasp or Lobster Claw
  • Ruler
  • Needle Nose Pliers
  • Bent Nose Pliers
  • Flush Cutter

Step 2: Determine the Desired Length of Your Necklace

Determine the desired length of your necklace.

I am making and 18-inch necklace. The bracelet is approximately 6-inches and I will add 12-inches of chain.

Note: You can make the necklace as long or short as you want. If making the necklace for yourself, I recommend considering your wardrobe and deciding if you will be wearing it with a low cut or high cut top to determine the ideal length. The great thing about making your own jewelry is you can select bead colors to match your current wardrobe and you can make your jewelry multi-colored to match multiple outfits. You can also examine your existing necklaces as a guide length.

Step 3: Measure and Cut Chain

Measure the chain and cut the desired length. Then cut the chain in half.

My chain is going to be 12-inches then I will cut them into two 6-inch pieces.

Step 4: Attach Chain to Ends of Bracelet

Attach the chain to each end of the bracelet.

Step 5: Attach Jump Hoops

Attach jump hoops to the outer ends of the chain. Be sure to leave one loop open to attach the lobster claw.

Step 6: Attach the Clasp

Attach the clasp to the jump loop and close the circle.

Your necklace is complete.
