Introduction: Cork Cutter

I recently had to cut a lot of small pieces of cork ends. My hand quickly got tired of using the box-cutter in a repetitive action. This is a modified version of this plastic bottle cutter. You use it by applying pressure with the push stick while turning the top of the cork. The blade can be adjusted to cut thicker pieces simply by adding more washers.

WARNING! this tool can be dangerous if not used with a push stick please

Step 1: What You Will Need

The cork-o-cutter can be made for a few dollars.

  • A board of almost any length, be sure you have enough space to lay your push stick flat on it. ***Please try to source your board from up-cycled material as the street are normally littered with IKEA and particle fall aparts. There is no need to sacrifice part of a tree for this simple tool.***
  • 4 Medium washers 2cm (I have one extra in my picture)
  • 6 Large washers 4cm
  • 2 bolts (The size isn't really important, large enough to hold the washers which can hold the blade)
  • 2 nuts
  • A drill bit for bolt
  • Drill bit so the nut will be flush when set on the work surface.
  • Utility knife blade
  • Lots of cork

Step 2: Outline and Drill Holes

  1. Place the washers on your board allowing for enough room so the cork can pass through easily.
  2. Trace the inner and outer part of the washer
  3. Drill a hole in the inner circle

Step 3: Drill a Countersink

Using a drill larger than the head of your bolt drill a hole on the underside of your board

Step 4: Fit and Test to See If Flush With Worksurface

Step 5: Adjust Height

  1. Place your pre-cut model cork on the surface
  2. Add medium washers
  3. Add more large washers until you reach the desired height

Step 6: Install Blade


  1. Place the blade at the correct position between two large washers.
  2. Thread and tighten the nuts until the blade is held firmly in place.

Step 7: Cut Them Up

    1. Clamp your board securely to your work surface
    2. using a push stick firmly apply pressure while twisting the top to the cork.
    3. Repeat until you have nothing left.
