About: Sewing Enthusiast

I made 2 cozy hoodies to throw on when it's chilly. It can be made from any fabric thicker or thinner. Just have fun with it!

Supplies

  1. 2 -2 1/2 yards per hoodie - flannel or desired fabric
  2. Matching Thread
  3. Lace Ribbon (optional)
  4. Scissors
  5. Tailors chalk or pen
  6. Pins
  7. Ruler or tape measure
  8. Long sleeved shirt to use as pattern

Step 1: Drafting and Cutting Hoodie Body

Hoodie Body

Fold fabric in half, right sides together

Place shirt with top on the Fold

Fold in shirt sleeves

Traces 1.5 inches outside of shirt

Mark where neck hole begins on each side

Cut it out

Fold in half so that one shoulder sits on top of the other one

On the Fold, measure 2 inches from the top, mark it

Draw a curved line from the mark you just made to the mark for neck hole.

Cut this off.

Open fabric, pick a side to be the front, and cut the neck hole lower.

Step 2: Measure, Draft and Cut Out Sleeves

Sleeves

Measure length of the sleeve of the shirt used as template. Add 2 inches to length for hemming and seam allowance.

Measure the widest part of the same sleeve. Multiply by 2. Plus add 1 inch for 1/2 inch seam allowance.

On wrong side of fabric draw a cross with the length and width measurements you just took, starting with length. draw width 6.5 in from top

At the bottom of cross, divide the width in half, draw a line using the number centered at bottom of cross.

Using the ends of the lines as guides, draft the sleeves. The shape should look like the picture. It doesn't have to be exact, but very similar.

Cut 2

Step 3: Drafting and Cutting Hood

Measure all the way around the neck hole. Then subtract 2 inches.

On wrong side of Fabric draw a squares using the number from the measurement you just took as the bottom horizontal line of the square

The vertical line needs to be equal to or longer than the horizontal one. This just depends on how big you want the hood to be.

Round off the top left corner of square.

With right sides together, cut 2 pieces.

Step 4: Draft and Cut Out Front Pocket

Fold fabric with right sides together

Along the fold measure and draw a rectangle 15 in (on fold) x 9.5 in.

Place a mark on fold at 7.5 in.

Cut out and Keep folded

At the mark you made on the Fold, measure and mark 2.5 in on each side of the mark

On shorter sides of rectangle, measure and mark 4 in down from fold.

Draw a curved line from mark the fold to the mark you just made on short side.

Do this on both top sides

Cut along these lines

Pin fabric together and set aside

It should look like the picture.

(Kind of looks like I'm making panties! Ha!!!)

Step 5: Assemble and Sew

Hoodie body - Right sides facing each other sew shoulders together at the top

Lay opened with right side up like picture.

Step 6: Assemble and Sew

Sleeves - Fold sleeve in half long ways and mark the center n each end

Right sides facing, line up center mark on sleeve to the seam on the shoulder with the rest of the sleeve laying over neck hole

Pin in place

Sew sleeve starting in the center and sewing down each side till you get to the bottom of the arm hole on that side

Repeat on the other half starting in the center again.

Repeat this for the other sleeve.

Laid out flat, looks like picture.

Fold under twice and sew hemn or add a border if desired or both.

It's easier to do in this step

Step 7: Assemble and Sew

Pocket - with right sides facing, starting at fold, sew around edges stopping 1.5 in from bottom center

Repeat on the other side leaving a 3 in opening on the bottom to turn it.

Turn it right side out

Top stitch around all sides using this to close up opening.

Approx 4 in from bottom, Center and pin pocket to front side of hoodie. Adjust up or down as needed to fit you comfortably. An easy way is to put hoodie on and pin pocket in desired location.

Sew sides and bottom, then across the top. Leaving cut outs open. See picture

Step 8: Assemble and Sew

Sides and Underside of Sleeves - Right sides together, line up and pin sides and sleeves together

Starting at end of sleeve or bottom of side, either is good, sew all the the way up one side and down the other.

Sew both sides

It MUST be one continuous line of stitching from start to stop on each side. This will greatly reduce chances of bunching under the arm.

You want the stitching to Curve around the under arm , Not make a 45° angle.

It also makes the garment more comfortable.

Take your time sewing the around the curve and over those seams for best results.

Fold under twice and sew hemn around the bottom of hoodie or add a border or both if desired.

Step 9: Assemble and Sew

Hood - Right sides together , sew up the back of the hood and around to top .

Fold under twice and sew hemn around face opening of hood or add border or both.

Find and mark center of neck hole on backside of hoodie

Right sides together, line up center seam of hood to the center mark you just made. Pin in place

Continue pinning the rest of the hood around neck hole.

Beginning in the center of the hood in the back, start sewing in either direction around neck.

Back to the center and sew the opposite direction around the neck.

Fold remaining 2-3 inches of neck under once and sew hemn.

Finish all seams with an overclock stitch or a zigzag stitch for neat seams.

Step 10: Try on Hoodie

Enjoy your hand crafted, warm and cozy hoodie!!
