Introduction: Crochet Whale

Hi everyone! This is a whale I created and I wanted to share with everyone. :) You will need to know basic crocheting techniques, but the internet is full of tutorials. Have fun!

Step 1: Materials and Terms

Here is the list of materials I used:

  • E (3.5 mm) crochet hook
  • Loops and Threads Impeccable Clear Blue (Worsted 4)
  • Lion Brand Vanna's Choice White (Worsted 4)
  • Safety eyes (9 mm)
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch markers

Stitches and terminology you will need to know:

  • single crochet (sc)
  • increase (inc)
    • 2 single crochet in the same spot
  • decrease (dec)
    • feed the hook through the front 2 loops, yarn over and pull the yarn through (you should have two loops on your hook now), and yarn over and pull through
  • Magic circle (MC)
    • Here's a great video made by Planet June: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLUaywX0-WE

  • Fasten off
    • cut the yarn and pull the loop until the yarn ends

Step 2: Body

Start with a magic loop

  1. MC 6 (6)
  2. [inc]x6 (12)
  3. [sc, inc]x6 (18)
  4. [sc 2, inc]x6 (24)
  5. [sc3, inc]x6 (30)
  6. Sc 30 (30)
  7. Sc 30 (30)
  8. Sc 30 (30)
  9. Sc 30 (30)
  10. Sc 30 (30)
  11. [sc 2, dec]x6, sc 6 (24)
  12. Sc 24
  13. Insert eyes and stuff whale
  14. [sc, dec]x6, sc 6 (18)
  15. Sc 18
  16. [dec]x6, sc 6 (12)
  17. Sc 12 (12)
  18. Sc 12 (12)
  19. Split into 6 sc sections
  20. [inc, sc 2]x2 (8)
  21. [inc, sc 3]x2 (10)
  22. [inc, sc 4]x2 (12)
  23. Sc 12 (12)
  24. [dec, sc 4]x2 (10)
  25. [dec, sc 3]x2 (8)
  26. [dec, sc 2]x2 (6)
  27. [dec, sc]x2 (4), fasten off. Use a yarn needle to sew up the circle and tie off

Step 3: Belly

Chain 9

  1. Starting from the second chain from the hook, sc 7 in the back loops of the foundation chain. 2 sc in last back loop. Turn and sc 7 on the front loops. 2 sc in the last front loop. (18)
  2. [inc], sc 6, [inc]x3, sc 6, [inc]x2 (24)
  3. [sc, inc], sc 6, [sc, inc]x3, sc 6, [sc, inc]x2 (30)
  4. [sc 2, inc], sc 6, [sc 2, inc]x3, sc 6, [sc 2, inc]x2 (36)
  5. [sc 3, inc], sc 6, [sc 3, inc]x3, sc 6, [sc 3, inc]x2 (42)
  6. [sc 4, inc], sc 6, [sc 4, inc]x3, sc 6, [sc 4, inc]x2 (48)

Fasten off

Step 4: Flippers

  1. MC 6 (6)
  2. [Sc, inc] x3 (9)
  3. Sc 9 (9)
  4. [Sc, dec] x3 (6)
  5. [sc, dec] x2 (4)

Fasten off. Using a needle, loop the thread through the second stitch (the one on the other side of where you fastened off). Pull tight. Stick the needle through where you just closed off and re-emerge the needle somewhere in the second row. Pull gently and stop once there is no more loose thread sticking out from the end. (Do not pull tight! It'll ruin the look of the flipper.) Pass the needle through a single piece of yarn twice to prevent the thread from pulling up on the flipper tip.

Step 5: Sewing Everything Together!

I would put the belly on with pins and sew around. Then use pins to position the flippers and sew them on.
