Introduction: Crochet Headband
This is a great, easy crochet winter project to keep your ears toasty warm. Please enjoy this pattern and share your completed projects!
Supplies needed:
H hook
Medium weight yarn (I used Caron's Vicki Howell's Sheep(ish) in Plum(ish), Raspberry(ish) and Teal(ish))
Button
Needle
Stitches used (US terminology):
ch - Chain
hdc - Half double crochet

sc - Single crochet
ss - Slip stitch
Step 1: Starting Your Headband
Chain 80.
Step 2: Row 1
2hdc in second chain from hook. Hdc 77. 5hdc in last chain. Now working on opposite side of chain, hdc 77. 3hdc in last chain (which is also where you put 2 hdc at the beginning of this row). ss in top of first stitch. Before pulling yarn through to ss, change color if desired. (164)
Step 3: Row 2
Ch 2. 2hdc in 3rd loop in joining stitch. Hdc in 3rd loop in next 78 stitches. 2hdc in third loop in next 4 stitches. Hdc in 3rd loop in next 78 stitches. 2hdc in third loop in next 3 stitches. Joins with ss in first stitch. (172)
Step 4: Row 3
Chain 2. 2hdc in joining stitch. Hdc in next 82 stitches. 2hdc in next 4 stitches. Hdc in next 82 stitches. 2hdc in next 3 stitches. Join with ss in first stitch. Before pulling yarn through to ss, change color if desired. (180)
Step 5: Row 4
Ch 2. 2hdc in 3rd loop in joining stitch. Hdc in 3rd loop in next 86 stitches. 2hdc in third loop in next 4 stitches. Hdc in 3rd loop in next 86 stitches. 2hdc in third loop in next 3 stitches. Joins with ss in first stitch. (188)
Step 6: Row 5
Chain 1. 2sc in joining stitch. Sc in next 90 stitches. 2sc in next 4 stitches. Sc in next 90 stitches. 2sc in next 3 stitches. Join with ss in first stitch of round. Cut yarn and fasten off. Weave in ends. (196)
Overlap ends and sew button through both layers.
If you'd like your headband to be wider, follow pattern of previous rounds.

Thanks so much! I usually crochet with muted, organic colors, so I stepped out of my box for that one. I think it looks neat, almost like it's 3 headbands stacked on top of each other. :)

I agree, I like the 3D kind of effect. Did you stitch behind the stitches to get that effect? I usually hook into the little "v" at the top of the stitch.

Yes, every other row of hdc is done in the "third loop". When you hdc, if you look at the wrong side of your work, there is another loop just below the "v" where you usually put your hook. This causes the "v" to move to the front of you work and gives you that almost knitted look. In this case, using the different colors, it makes it look stacked. I think it also gives a neat look to a headband with a single color; it almost gives it a ribbed effect.
