Hi,

These sad and scared teddies are easier to make then they might look.

If you have crocheted a ball form before this will not be hard for you, it just takes a little time to make the different parts. It’s not really that important that you get the exact same number of stitches at the end of each round that I have, especially if you use a yarn like mine, it just affects the size of the bear, feel free to change it to your liking. Maybe you want a bigger head, fuller belly or something else that makes it YOUR teddy bear?

I have made these teddies without pattern before, so the pattern is new for the creation of this teddy - so please - notify me if you find any error!

Step 1: Tools and Supplies

Finish size approximately 15 cm tall (sitting)

To make you will need

1. Yarn. I used a yarn called Puddel, from Drops. This yarn is perfect for sewing teddy bears! Try to find a yarn that looks like this one. You will need around 100 grams

2. Plastic eyes with safety backing 7-10mm (you can find it at any craft shop)

3. White felt for craft to make the white of the eyes (3*3 cm is enough)

4. Padding material ( I use the cheapest IKEA pillow padding or cotton)

5. Fabric for inside of ears and under feet, a sheet of 15*15 cm will be enough, I use old pillow cases that I bought from yard sales. There is a lot of beautiful vintage fabrics out there…

6. White yarn for scars

7. Brown yarn for nose

8. Sewing yarn needle

9. Crochet hook size 4.5mm

10. Fabric marker ( I use a brown and a black)

11. Thread

12. Sewing needle

13. Scissors

Abbreviations

-Single crochet (sc)

-Crochet increase (inc) which mean-make 2 single crochet in same stitch

-Crochet decrease (dec) which mean-Crochet 2 stitches together

-Stitch (st)

* = Repeat stitches from * to end of *

I crocheted this bear working in back loops only, except at the foot piece, where it is clearly described how to do instead.

Step 2: Creating Eyes

I use plastic eyes that is all black but I want a little white of the eye to make the eye a little more sad.

We need to construct them first, since we need to be able to secure them in the head before adding padding.

Cut a hole in the felt for the eye pin and glue the white felt onto the back of the eye, let it dry.

Cut the form of the eye you want.

Step 3: Head

You will work from back of head to nose and it will look like a drop

Round4. *Sc in next 2 st,2sc in next st* and repeat from * around (28)

I think it’s easiest to add the eyes and padding here, before we make the last round of crocheting.

Start by painting with a fabric marker onto the face for contouring of the eye, I paint a drop form to make the eye look a little sad.

Place the eye in the right position, be sure that it can’t fall off!

Add padding to the face.

Sew it together, it will be a little pointy at the nose part.

Step 4: Body

You will work from bottom to neck and it will look like a pear in shape

Round1. Make magic ring and 7sc in ring (7)

Round2. 2sc in each st around (14)

Round3. *Sc in next st, 2sc in next st* and repeat from * around (21)

Round4. *Sc in next 2 st,2sc in next st* and repeat from * around (28)

Round5.* Sc in next 3 st,2sc in next st* and repeat from * around (35)

Round6. Sc in each st around (35)

Round7. *sc in each of next 3 st,dec 1* and repeat from * around (28)

Round8. *sc in each of next 2 st,dec 1* and repeat from * around (21)

Finish of leave a long tail for sewing the head on.

Add padding.

Step 5: Ears

You will make two circles for ears. Starting in the middle of the ear.

Round1. Make magic ring and 7sc in ring (7)

Round2. 2sc in each st around (14)

Round3. Increase with 3 st evenly around (17)

Finish of and leave a little tail for sewing the ear to the head.

Step 6: Foot

You will make a circle for the sole of the foot and then add a little leg. Starting in the middle of the sole.

Round1. Make magic ring and 7sc in ring (7)

Round2. 2sc in each st around (14)

Round3. *Sc in next st, 2sc in next st* and repeat from * around (21)

Round4. *Increase with 5 st evenly around *(26)

Round5. Sc in each st around, crochet in front loop only, see photo for explanation. (26)

Round6. *Dec with 2 st evenly around *(24)

Round7. *sc in each of next 5 st,dec 1* and repeat from * around (20)

Round8. *Decrease with 5 st evenly around *(15)

Round9-11. Sc in each st around (12)

Round12. Dec 1 in each st around(6)

Finish of and leave a little tail for sewing the foot to the body.

No need to add padding to the foot.

Make one more, exactly like this one.

Step 7: Arms

You will make two arms. Starting in the middle of the hand.

Round1. Make magic ring and 5sc in ring (5)

Round2. 2sc in each st around (10)

Round3. *Sc in next st, 2sc in next st* and repeat from * around (15)

Round4. Sc in each st around (15)

Round5. *sc in each of next st,dec 1* and repeat from * around (10)

Round6. Sc in each st around (10)

Round7. *Dec with 2 st evenly around *(8)

Round8. Sc in each st around (8)

Round9. *Dec with 2 st evenly around *(6)

Round10-12. Sc in each st around (6)

Finish of and leave a little tail for sewing the arm to the body.

No need to add padding to arms.

Make one more, exactly like this one.

Step 8: Tail

Round1. Make magic ring and 7sc in ring (7)

Round2. 2sc in each st around (14)

Round3. *Sc in next st, 2sc in next st* and repeat from * around (21)

Round4. Sc in each st around (21)

Round5. *sc in each of next st,dec 1* and repeat from * around (14)

Add a little padding and sew it together, save the tail of yarn to sew it to the body later.

Step 9: Nose

Take your brown(or the colour of the nose you want) yarn and sew with a yarn needle on the pointy part of the head, depending on how big the nose becomes it will alter the look of the bear (take a look at my different teddies to see different noses)

Step 10: Construction

Now, we have all the crocheted pieces we need to make a teddy bear!

Sew the head to the body with the yarn tail we left on the body neck.

Sew the feet onto the bottom of the body, be sure to sew them in a position that the bear can sit down.

Sew the tail onto the body, as above, be sure that the bear can sit.

Sew the arms onto the body, right under the head.

Sew the ears onto the head, if you position them lower, you get a more dumb/cute apperence on the teddy bear.

Step 11: Fabric on Feet and in Ears

Now it’s time for adding the fabric, cut out two circles, a little smaller then the feet and then hand sew them in place on the sole, I think it adds to the charm if you can see the stitching, so no need for it to be perfect! :)

Cut out two circles for the ears and make the same thing for the ears as for the feet.

Step 12: Scars

Now your bear is almost done, and now it’s up to your imagination. For this teddy bear, I add two scars, which I embroider with the yarn needle and a white yarn, one on the belly and one on the head.
