Intro: D4E1 - Cup Holder for Walker (Gemino 30)

This project is a collaboration between students industrial product design and occupational therapy from Howest University in Kortrijk (http://designforeveryone.howest.be/). Together with users of walkers we made an inventory of missing functionalities and/or problems with the walker. After this inventory, the intention is that a solution is chosen for one of the existing problems and we start making prototypes in co-creation with the end user. The result is a cup holder for a specific walker our client has (Gemino 30).

The cup holder is capable of holding different shaped drinks, can rotate 360° around the shaft of the walker in one direction to adjust the position of the cup and the Holding Mechanism can be easily removed, so it doesn't sit in the way when folding the walker.

Students:

  • Michiel Thienpont (occupational therapy)
  • Stephany Garcia (industrial product design)
  • Robbe Van Quickelberghe (industrial product design)

STEP 1: Printing the Parts

The cup holder exists out of a Holding Mechanism (HM) and a Rotating Mechanism (RM).

Layer heights used for the parts:

  • 0.16 : HM_Ring1 / HM_Ring2 / HM_Leg_Type1 / HM_Leg_Type2 / RM_Mount
  • 0.20 : HM_Clip / RM_Clip
  • 0.28 : RM_Rail1 / RM_Rail2 / RM_TopCap1 / RM_TopCap2 / RM_BottomCap1 / RM_BottomCap2

The layout of how the parts should be printed is shown in the images above. It's important to know that all the parts are printed with the setting "one at a time" on.

It's recommended to print spare clips in case they break when assembling.

STEP 2: Assembling the Holding Mechanism

Parts needed for assembling the Holding Mechanism:

  • HM_Clip (8x)
  • HM_Ring1
  • HM_Ring2
  • HM_Leg_Type1 (4x)
  • HM_Leg_Type2 (4x)

Assembly steps:

1) Put HM_Ring1 on top of HM_Ring2 and use pliers to insert the clips in the slots. (see images)

2) Insert the legs in the slots of the ring (make sure to switch between legs when placing them, see images)

3) The holding Mechanism is assembled.

STEP 3: Assembling the Rotating Mechanism

Parts needed for assembling the Rotating Mechanism:

  • RM_Clip (4x)
  • RM_TopCap1
  • RM_TopCap2
  • RM_BottomCap1
  • RM_BottomCap2
  • RM_Rail1
  • RM_Rail2
  • RM_Mount

Follow the video to see the steps of this assembly, for display we used a printed version of the handle tube.
