Introduction: Custom Wire Connectors
Make your Arduino prototype projects more professional looking, organized, and more solid.
Step 1: Bits and Pieces
- The DuPont rainbow wire commonly comes in 40pin strips and I recommend sticking to the female ends when customizing. (With or without housing.)
- Various preferred sizes of housing connectors.
- Optional: Long Male Header Pins ;-)
Step 2: Remove the Housing
Remove the housing by gently sticking a pin under the plastic tab located on one side of the end of the female connector's housing, either from a male wire or the 2.54mm header pin.
- the trick is to push the wire into the housing so that you can get under the plastic tab
Pictures will make this clearer.
Step 3: Customized Wire Harness
Following your wire diagrams you can make customized wire harnesses.
In the example pictures I made custom wire-harnesses for connecting the nRF24L01 Wireless Transceiver module to the Arduino Pro Mini.

Nice idea - very professional.
A quick and effective, if slightly less elegant, method is to make the connections using wires from the 40-pin DuPont strips and then run a little super-glue (low viscosity) along the backs of the connectors. Wiggle them slightly to work the glue between the individual connectors before it sets. They will set into a solid block in a few seconds.
