Introduction: Custom Headboard

This Instructable will guide you through the making of a custom headboard. After checking out the prices for one, my wife and I decided to make one. It took two afternoons to complete the job and R$600,00 or about US$150.

Step 1: What You'll Need

You'll need:

  • 4x 6mm MDF boards measuring 115x75cm (about 4' x 3');
  • 7x 40x20x2500mm (2" x 3/4" x 7') wood slats;
  • 1900x2500x20mm (7' x 6' x 3/4" ) low density foam;
  • Nails, fasteners, contact glue (for the foam);

Tools:

  • Driller;
  • Saw;
  • Stapler;
  • Utility knife;
  • Screwdrivers;
  • Scissors;
  • Hammer;

Step 2: Frame

For the frame cut the MDF to size. In our case we bought the boards pre-cut from the home improvement store. Measure and cut the wood ribs around the MDF board, attaching them with nails. The corners can be reinforced with screws. We chose to make four boards reaching the width of the bed plus the two side cabinets, with a height of 1,15m or about 4 feet.

Step 3: Foam

Next cut the foam to the same size as the board and glue using contact glue. Trim the corners after the glue dries.

Step 4: Power Outlets and Fasteners

Drill holes for the various fasteners and power outlets if needed. I wanted the outlets to fall between the bed and the side cabinets. Two triangular metal pieces were added to the top of the outer panels to hang the completed board to the wall.

Step 5: Draping

Cover each board with your favorite material, which can be linen, leather etc. Use a stapler to attach it to the frame.

Step 6: Finishing and Installation

Join the panels with small metal pieces like the ones in the third picture. The idea is to align the panels and not let them move while installing. Clamps might be helpful. Hang to the wall using two L-shaped screws. The panel rests on the floor also.
