Bottle cutting is a great way to recycle glass bottles and a wonderful reason to have a drink :)

There are a few ways to cut glass bottles without a bottle cutter.

In this Instructable, we'll have a look at a way to cut glass bottles in half by using a blowtorch.

This method is also known as cracking off glass.

What's needed:

• Turntable (Lazy Susan)
• Blowtorch
• Glass cutter

If you don't have a glass cutter, you can use a metal saw. Break the saw in half and use the sharp corner to scratch the line on the bottle

STEP 1: Score/Scratch a Short Line Onto the Bottle

For your own safety, wear gloves and goggles.

Make sure to remove any corks from the bottle you are going to cut.

Score or scratch a short line onto the bottle. You will want to do it as straight as possible.

It's a good idea to use a practice bottle.

STEP 2:

Put the Bottle in the center of the turntable,

Keep the torch in the same height as the line.

Spin the turntable and heat the bottle until the line expands and splits the bottle in half.

You can sand the bottle to make a drinking glass or anything else.

I like to use silicone carbide powder to sand the bottle. It's quick and effective.

A method i found even better is scoring the bottle then pouring boiling water on the line NOT THE WHOLE BOTTLE and then immediately running cold water on the line. Near clean cut every time and little sanding afterward required. AND the top is salvageable to make the bottle not leak if you glue it back on...or even tape it!!

I am definitely going to try this. I have tried the burning string and ice water method a few times with no success. Your way looks better. Thanks for posting.

This method is definetaly better than the string.

I still prefer a bottle cutter, but this one is a great alternative.
