DIY Bird Feeder,(monster Can and Milk Jug)

I started this project with my STEM teacher telling us we had to do a recyclable project for Instructables. My first thought was to make a bird feeder. Now to do this, I came up with some plans to find a big can, in this case, a monster can, and then a milk jug for the base (I do not have a photo of the Jug). I found the Monster can relatively fast at my school due to the fact that high schoolers love their energy drinks, the milk; however, I found it in my recycling bin at my house because well my family enjoys milk. So I decided that the Milk jug would be used as a plane for the birds to eat off, and the Monster could be the supplier for the feeder. After you get the Can and Jug make sure you clean them out thoroughly before using them so that way you are not using dirty recycled material. For those of you that want to try and make this, you need a big can, could be any, a milk jug, wire cutters, an Exacto knife of some kind, some scissors, and a hot glue gun. You will also need some green paint and a type of brown paint. The paint that I used is not very effective as it comes off pretty quickly, and I recommend using something better if you can find or have it.

Step 1: Start to Cut

After you have all of your supplies, you want to cut the holes. I decided to cut out a tiny opening for the feeder that I would later put the milk jug handle in, but we will save that for later. After cutting this, I made sure that the lid of the monster can was still intact and useable (in this case, it was!) So now that I have a can that can get feeder in and out of it, it is time to work on the milk jug. I cut the jug right in half, allowing the bottom half of the jug to be used. I used the exact knife and then some scissors for the milk jug because the Exacto knife was a little challenging to use on it. You want to cut the jug under the handle of the jug so that way you could use whatever is accessed above. I did not use much of the top but some of you might be able to come up with something creative.

Step 2:

After you get all of your cuts after you get them, this step is pretty straightforward, but I recommend good paint. The paint that I used made the paint job take two days, and even with the extra days, the pain still comes off, so be smart about the paint you use. You want to paint the entire milk jug, front back inside. The Monster can however you do not want to paint the insides however, you just want to paint the outside of it. This is so that you do not harm the feed while it is in the can. After it is well painted you want to let them sit without doing anything for a day.

Step 3:

After your paint is all dry, all you need to do now is hot glue the can to the milk jug. Once the can is hot-glued to the milk jug, you need to cut out the handle of the milk jug and insert it into the hole that you cut out earlier. Once it is attached, you will put the feeder in the can, and you have a bird feeder. Enjoy the bird feeder! :D
