Introduction: DIY Books Earrings

I thing there is a perfect book for everyone and every mood. I also think there are earrings for every mood, person, opportunity as well. This inspired me to create book earrings. There are two basic shapes: opened and closed book, and billion varieties how they will look at the end. I will show you how i made these, and sky is the limit what will you do with yours. These earrings can be perfect for you, or perfect gift for someone you love.

Supplies

Most of the things you need, you already have at home, or you can easily find it in nearby store that already sell diy/craft/hobby supplies.

Basic tool you need:

  • needle (any standard needle for hand sewing will do)
  • sewing thread (any color or quality. If you do not have any, you can use glue instead)
  • paper scissors
  • scalpel
  • needle nose pliers or any other small cutters
  • lighter (not necessary - only to worm up needle if the hole on book is small)
  • printing paper or any other (for making sheets or entire book)
  • earring holders (can be bought in any hobby store)
  • 3d printer (not necessary, you can create book covers from paper as well)

Step 1: Print Book Covers With 3d Printer

If you do not have 3d printer skip this step. If you have 3d printer, there are 3 stl files, you can print them in SLA/FDM it does not matter. I used PETG, but you can use any material you wish. You can print it in colored filament or white, as you please.

Step 2: Preparing Paper for Sheets and Covers

You can use any paper you like. I used printing paper.

if you did not 3d printed your cover pages on 3d printer, then prepare more paper, since you will be making covers as well.

First cut paper to size of 3d printed covers, or if you create covers from paper, to size you like.

For middle pages I suggest creating two sided sheets for 3d printed covers, and one sided for paper covers. That was easier for me, but if you are creating open book from paper only, maybe it is easier to make double sheets as well.

For covers you can also use cardboard, pieces of wood, acrylic etc.

Step 3: Creating All Paper Book Earrings

If you decided to create paper only book earrings, this is step for you. if you are creating covers any other way, skip this step.

For all paper book earrings i used paper glue, two pieces of paper for each cover, and four pieces of paper for middle pages. I glued all together, straightened edges with scissors and punched hole with needle.

For more stiffed covers, use more paper.

If you want book to be closed, you can glue all pages right away. Just bear in mind that middle pages should be a bit smaller, than cover pages.

If you want book to be opened, I suggest gluing cover pages and middle pages separately, then punching holes and then gluing all together.

If book should be thicker, use more paper for middle pages.

You can make it look like torn, write a message in it, color the pages, play as you feel on the way.

Putting earrings holder is the same for all book types.

Step 4: Creating Non-paper Covers

Weather you 3d print covers or make them yourselves, take care that you have one big hole at he end of covers and two small holes at the middle for open book model.

For closed book model you only need one big hole at one end.

Big hole is for string that will connect earrings holder with "book"

Small holes are for needle and thread. Check if needle can pass trough small holes. If it can not, widen them with drill or use ligher to warm needle (if covers are from plastic) and widen small holes with warm needle.

!!! Be careful not to hurt yourselves, since these are small parts and you will probably hold pieces with your hands !!!

Use scalpel, any other knife or sand paper to make smooth finish on the edges of covers.

Step 5: Binding Middle Pages With Covers

Even up the middle paper with cover edges. Use needle with thread to punch holes in paper. If you need, assist yourselves with plies to hold needle more securely, while you punch holes.

"Saw" the book two times, and tie a knot at the back of each book.

Step 6: Decorating the Earrings

You can decorate them in million ways.

If you paint them, i suggest using acrylic colors since they are easy to use and when they dry, they will be waterproof.

You can leave them as is also.

You can print or write something on paper, make the dedication to someone special, or create a message that you want to send to everyone, looking at you, while you wear them.

You can also make paper look old. There are already a lot of tutorials how to make paper look old with coffee or dark tea, so I did not cover that here.

Whatever you do with middle paper, i suggest doing it before "sewing" books.

Whatever you decide, I am sure you will have great time creating them!

Step 7: Putting Earrings Holder

Trough big hole put a piece of metal string. before cutting it, put earring holder on it, and use pliers to make a circle, so the metal circle hold earring and earring holder together. Then cut the extra string with cutters.

When you finish, everything should look like on pictures.
