This charming and rustic shelf cabinet is a perfect example of how creativity can transform everyday materials into something stunning and functional. Made entirely from cardboard, this DIY piece is shaped and finished to resemble a natural plaster shelf, giving it a unique, altogether aesthetic look. Lightweight yet sturdy, this eco-friendly project brings style and sustainability into your living space.

So, today, I will show you how you can make this shelf cabinet from scratch.

Supplies

  1. Large cardboard sheets (from old boxes)
  2. Cutter/utility knife
  3. Scissor
  4. Ruler and pencil
  5. Newspaper or old paper
  6. White glue
  7. paper tape
  8. Plaster of Paris (POP)
  9. Gloves
  10. Water as needed
  11. Polystyrene

Step 1: PLAN THE DESIGN:

  1. Sketch out your shelf design on paper.
  2. Decide on the number of compartments and their shapes (asymmetric, rounded like in the image).
  3. Measure and mark the final size of the whole unit.

Step 2: CREATE THE FRAME:

  1. Take a big carton size, as shown in the picture, and remove the front sheet of the carton.
  2. Sketch out your layout or shelf design on the cardboard.
  3. Cut strips of cardboard for the shelves. You have to cut the same measurement of cardboard strips as the side breadth of the carton.

Step 3: ASSEMBLE THE STRUCTURE:

  1. Attach the strips as you draw the shelves.
  2. Use paper tape generously to make the structure sturdy.
  3. Reinforce with extra layers of cardboard if needed, especially at the joint.
  4. Fill up the gaps between the cabinet with the help of polystyrene and newspaper.

  1. TIP: Fold the cardboard properly and make the structure before sticking it.

Step 4: FRONT LAYER OF CABINET:

  1. Take the cardboard sheet you had previously cut off from the carton.
  2. Draw the same layout on this cardboard sheet as well and cut out the shapes.
  3. Now, stick this cardboard sheet on top of the base structure with the help of paper tape.
  4. Secure the structure properly; otherwise, in the next step, it will be problematic.

Step 5: . PAPER AND WHITE GLUE LAYER:

  1. Prepare the white glue mixture (Add white glue + water in a bowl).
  2. Tear newspaper into squire size and dip into the paste.
  3. Apply paper white glue mixture layers all over the shelf structure to give it a solid, textured finish.
  4. Let it dry completely (this may take a day or more, depending on the thickness).

Step 6: ADD TEXTURE:

  1. For a more earthy or clay-like texture, mix 1 bowl of water, 2 cups of plaster of pairs, and a little amount of white glue (to make a cake batter-like consistency).
  2. Apply a thin layer of white glue over the dried paper white glue layer.
  3. Apply 2 to 3 coats for a good texture.
  4. Smooth out with your fingers or a spatula for an organic finish.
  5. Let it dry completely.
  6. Style and decorate cabinet with your favourite items.

TIP: While working with Plaster of Paris, you have to work quickly.
