DIY Car by a 7 Year Old

Why not make your own toys and learn as you play?

Learn to do it yourself (DIY) as 7 year old Abzy teaches you how to make a simple DC Motor Car powered by battery entirely on his own.

There is a lot of electronic waste when toys are thrown away. Abzy had an idea to salvage parts from broken toys and recycle, redesign & remake them into something innovative.

This project is designed in a manner to show the interconnections between the DC motor, Switch, LED Lights and Batteries to spark interest in young innovative minds and encourage them to develop such projects on their own.

Step 1: Material Required

Tools Required

1. Wire Cutter
2. Glue Gun
3. Any small wires for connectivity
4. Screw Driver
5. Solder
6. Soldering Wire

Safety

1. Safety Mask for soldering
2. Safety goggles for soldering

Raw Material Required

1. 3 x 1.5v Cells
2. 2 x Wheels
3. LED Lights
4. 6 x Popsicle Sticks
5. Any Toy Car Body
6. Broken Car Base with 2 x wheels and a DC Powered Motor

Step 2: Preparing the Chassis

Heat the glue gun when optimal temperature is reached use it on the broken car base to firmly attach popsicle sticks on either side to prepare the car chassis.

Step 3: Attach the Wheels to the Car Chassis

• Measure distance from the front wheel to where you want to attach the back wheel
• Use ample glue from the glue gun on the popsicle stick
• Place the wheel on the glued part of the popsicle stick and press firmly for a good grip
• Repeat the same step for the 2nd wheel

Be sure to attach wheels in parallel and at equal distance from the front wheels

Step 4: Make Connections

• Heat the soldering gun and start making connections from the switch to the DC motor as shown in the pictures or according to the circuit diagram provided. (Alternatively you maye use the circuit diagram provided in the pdf document for help)
• Be sure to connect the positive and negative terminals correctly to ensure the car goes in the forward direction when turned on
• Put 3x cells in the Battery holder (underneath the car)
• Use glue gun to attach the LEDs to the front portion of the car

SAFETY ADVICE:

• Always use a face mask to cover your nose and mouth when soldering this is to avoid inhaling harmful fumes
• Always use safety goggles to protect eyes, sometimes the soldering wire (tin) pieces can fly off if not handled properly
• Always solder in a well ventilated place
• Adult supervision is advised.

Step 5: Finalizing

• Use glue gun on the base to connect the car body
• Ample glue must be used to ensure a firm grip
• Use glue gun on the remaining 4 popsicle sticks to design and attach the spoiler as shown
• Test the car by turning on the switch
