Intro: DIY Cat Water Fountain
Whenever I go to the refrigerator to fill up a glass of water, my cat BoBo runs as fast as he can to get a sip. Whenever he hears running water he runs to see if he can have any. He is crazy about water. I usually fill up old water bottles and he drinks out of them, so I thought why not make something to do it for me.
With a fountain from Salvation Army for 3.99, some popsicle sticks and a hot glue gun, this project was cheap, easy and fun. If you don't have a cat, it also serves as an elegant fountain with a beautiful sound.

STEP 1: Disassemble the Fountain
The best part. With a hammer and five minutes, I had the fountain apart with just the bottom and the pump left.
Hot glue the pump to the bottom of the base and your all set for now.

STEP 2: Assemble the Fountain
Once you have the pump glued to the bottom and the hose sticking up, grab and old bottle and cut a hole big enough for the hose. Using popsicle sticks and hot glue, position the bottle however you want it. Once it's in place, put the hose in the hole you cut. Now use hot glue and seal the hole so no water leaks out. This is important so that you don't end up with a mess.
I used some extra popsicle sticks to cover the back half of the base as you can see. It makes it look a little bit nicer.

STEP 3: Wait for Cats
Now for the easiest step...wait for the cats. As soon as Bobo heard that water he ran to get some.

Thanks. I'll be on that to see if our cats will engage. If they get used to the sound of trickling water, I think they will use it. We will enjoy it if they agree, merely as a soothing background sound. I like the insight tip on getting the fountain pump. Way2go. _ga-

Great idea but agree with snowmatrix9090. Using a glass bottle would be awesome. Would require drilling instead of cutting but worth the extra work for health of pet and for aesthetics.

Great idea but using a plastic bottle like that releases BPA's into the water over time just like its bad for you to reuse those water bottles a lot, its bad for your cat too. Those bottles are designed to decompose over time. But it is a great idea, might just want to pick something else besides the bottle or maybe take it out all together.
