How to make a coiled cable
Items required: Cable, Pencil, Hair Dryer, Paper Clips
STEP 1:
Find a regular cable that you want to coil.
STEP 2:
Put the cable on the pencil and clip it with paper clip on one side.
Start rolling cable around the pencil, when you get to the end use paper clip to keep it in place.
STEP 3:
Use a Hair Dryer to heat up the cable from front and back (approximately 90 seconds from each side).
After you heat it up leave it for 15 min to cool off.
STEP 4:
Take the paper clips off and pull the pencil out.
And you are done.

I mentioned this to some people and someone said NEVER NEVER do this that it makes the electricity move faster and can cause fires! Sounds nutty to me but do you have any reference that I can site that this is indeed a safe procedure?

No references.
But electricity does not get any faster. They were either pulling your leg, or are not really as bright as they like to think.
If you coil a long mains cable up in loops you can under ideal conditions, make a heating coil. Like a spooled extension cable. Which is why you are supposed to unwind the whole reel when using a long extension.
Small voltage DC from a wall wart like this. Not a problem.
