Intro: DIY Decorative Wooden Fish Stand

This Instructable started due to two main reasons:

1. My wife wanted something nice to put on our living room Console table (Which I built as well - see on the pictures).

2. I built a "Scroll Saw" (Jigsaw Table) few months ago and I though that it's about the time to use it for my new project. :)

STEP 1: Preparing the Fish Shapes

I made 2 sizes of Fish shapes and printed them. (Big - 14*8cm, Small - 11*6.5cm)

Then I cut the shapes with Scissors.

STEP 2: Drawing the Fish Shapes on the Wood

I drawed the shapes over the 10mm wooden board.

3 of the smaller size fish, 2 of the bigger size fish.

STEP 3: Cutting the Wooden Fish

The Base:

I cut a base for the stand, from the 17mm board - 25*14cm.

The Fish:

I cut the Fish shapes using the Jigsaw table I made before, which is kind of a "Scroll Saw". (As mentioned above - Big - 14*8cm, Small - 11*6.5cm)

STEP 4: Sanding the Wooden Fish and Wooden Base

I sanded the shapes sides and surface using random orbit sander and also using sanding paper.

STEP 5: Painting the Wooden Fish

I started with making a rounded line with a pencil, for the head of the fish.

Later, I painted the back of the fish with different acrylic paint colors, and black eyes (dot) with a thin paint brush.

STEP 6: Drilling Holes for the Metal Rods on the Base and Fish

I drilled 2 mm holes on the base of the stand and on the bottom of each fish.

STEP 7: Painting the Waves on the Base

I made a 'free hand' waves line on the bottom of the base using a pencil, and later filled it with one acrylic paint color.

STEP 8: Paint With Clear Protective Topcoat

I painted all of the wooden painted parts with clear protective topcoat, to protect the wood and colors.

STEP 9: Finding Metal Rods and Cutting Them in Different Heights

I needed thin metal rods... I didn't know where to buy such rods and didn't have too much time...

Finally, I found something at home that was fixed few times, and got its time to be recycled :)

So now I had many 2mm rods which were perfect for the project (and have some more for later projects). I didn't have to paint them since they were covered with gray color plastic, which was great for the project.

STEP 10: Connecting the Rods to the Base With Wood Glue

Initially, I used wood glue to connect the rods to the base and Fish with wood glue.

This glue didn't hold them for long, after my kids touched the fish and turned them... :)
Later I fixed it using Super 7 glue which hold it very good.

STEP 11: Connecting the Rods to the Fish With Wood Glue

STEP 12: The Result

This is the result of the Fish stand, standing on the Console table (You can see the Console Table build process HERE)

That's it... My wife really likes it, so I'm satisfied 😉

The hardest part in this Instructable is cutting the Fish shapes.

Using a Jigsaw on regular way can be hard, so I made this Jigsaw table before, for such projects.
