Introduction: DIY Dog Mobility Harness for Under $15

Our dog is getting old and is having trouble getting up and walking around. Dog mobility harness are very pricey and instead of buying one I decided to make my own.

Step 1: Materials

1. An old towel or material of your choice;

I used a towel that was bought at K-mart

2. 4 Lashing Straps

3. 2 Handles from an old lunchbox, Backpack, or you can use the left over Lashing straps

4. Measuring tape

Step 2: Measure Your Dog

1. Measure the circumference of your dog at place 1 and 2 using a sewing tape measure.

2. Measure the distance between the front and rear legs of your dog

Here are my dogs measurements:

1 - 29"

2 - 23"

3 - 14"

3. Subtract 1.75" from measurements 1 and 2.

Final measurements are:

1 - 27.25"

2 - 21.25"

3 - 14"

Step 3: Cut the Fabric

The picture shows the dimensions that I used. The three measurements that you took are in parenthesis. Remember to adjust all dimensions in order to fit your dog.

Step 4: Sew Around the Edges

Sew a 1/4" seam all the way around. To make it easier you can iron the edges. Place it on your dog to ensure it fits properly. Make any adjustments. I had to cut down the lengths of the "y" because it was too long.

Step 5: Cutting the Straps and Sewing Them in Place

Cut the 4 straps about 8" from the male end of the buckle. Cut 4 12" pieces from the remaining strap. Burn the ends to stop the strap from fraying. Only sew about 6" of the female end of the buckle. Leaving 6" for adjusting the harness. Sew an "X" into the strap at both ends for extra strength.

Step 6: Sew on the Handles

If you are using old handles that were taken off of a lunchbox or backpack sew about 1" on both sides of the handle. If you are using the left over straps, cut it 8" and sew about 1" on both sides. Sew an "X" on both sides to give the handle extra strength.

Step 7: Place It on Your Dog

You may have to make minor adjustments to get it to fit perfectly. Great job and enjoy your DIY mobility dog harness.
